3/n To decontaminate it, best info so far is 70 degrees celcius (around 158 Fahrenheit) for 30 minutes in the oven. Would do this every of you are in frequent contact (subway) or every 3 days with infrequent contact (grocery visits). I have no data here. Just trying my best ...
4/n Obviously, remove the rubber bands when you put into the oven. When you wear a mask, make sure that the edges around your face are sealed as best as you can.
5/n Do not try Peroxide or bleach or chlorine on these cloth masks. As I've said before, viral load/dose exposire is key. If you are in a high viral load area, access an N95 mask. Read below.

1/n Can ONE genius bioengineering lab help with the following experiment ?
a. Take a homemade double/triple layered cotton mask
b) Establish the size of particle and filtration efficiency per size (or droplet) and plot a curve (x axis size, y axis filtration efficiency)
2/n c) Heat the mask at 70 degrees celcius for 30 minutes
d) Repeat the experiment
e) Do this for 5 or 10 times over
f) Give us the data
The question is: do repeated decontaminations of homemade masks change the filtration efficiency?
3/n The particle size should cover the range -- from 0.2 microns all the way to 1000 um. Respiratory droplets, all droplets generated by an expiratory event, have diameters d that cover a large size range from approximately 0.6 to more than 1000 µm.

1/1 The question of whether the PUBLIC should be wearing masks is the elephant in the room....

Let's assume that we FIRST GET MASKS TO THE HEALTH CARE WORKERS FIRST. That is obvious.
2/2 It seems that this question rests on several facts

1. Do they actually protect the wearer from infection ? Likely, if they are the right kind. This is an empirical question. A lab can test this in 3 days.
3/3 Next: can they be decontaminated safely ? Again, empirical question. Probably need VERY clear instructions from the CDC about how to do this.

1/1 There are 4-5 extremely promising candidate drugs in development for COVID-19/SARS Cov-2. We need to BUY TIME to allow these drugs to be tested in (hopefully) randomized studies.
2/2 "Buying time" means keeping hospital workers safe, limiting patient volumes, and keeping sick patients alive.
3/3 That, in turn, means giving proper personal protective equipment to the hospital workers, including masks and gowns.

Here's a quick thread on why Russia likely won't be cutting production...
First off, regardless of what Moscow says - it rarely follow up. This is especially true in oil, where it has less control over the production than people may assume..
Second - some technical aspects will make it difficult for Russia to cut production including extreme weather conditions (if they cut production, wells may freeze-this is quite costly) and lack of storage facilities

A short thread on the far right in Germany: Yesterday, #PEGIDA staged its 200th event in Dresden – with AfD politician Björn #Höcke as special guest. How many people were there? What about counterprotests? And what does the event tell us about the state of PEGIDA and AfD? (1/7)
According to media estimates, ca. 4,000 PEGIDA followers and slightly less (but vocal!) counterprotestors were present (ca. 2,500 to 3,000). This makes Dresden again unique: unlike elsewhere in Germany, far-right sympathizers outnumbered their opponents. (2/7)
The presence of Höcke underlines the strong standing of him & his far-right “Der Flügel” within AfD. Despite internal criticism of his presence (the Hamburg branch with elections on Sunday was very much against it), there was only limited public criticism by AfD colleagues. (3/7)

Cambiar orientación entre observador y normal al DVD, equivale a mirar zonas + cerca o + lejos de la imagen especular. Fuera de la zona especular, según la #DescripciónGeométrica, no debería haber luz. Pero es claro que haberla... la hay. Justamente: la esencia de la #difracción

Tutorial on how to make a map using QGIS. I'll turn @SenhorRaposa's 2000 Vermont town data into a map showing by how much Gore outran Senator Jeffords (or vice versa) in every town.
Step 1: Download QGIS for your computer, which is available here:

You'll also need some of Census' Tiger/Line County and County Sub shapefiles. The main download page for those is here:
