The number of forest fires in Brazil reached a new ten-year high in 2020. In the past year, there were over 222,000 forest fires, as the Brazilian space agency Inpe announced after evaluating satellite images.
This corresponds to an increase of 12.7 percent compared to the previous year. The agency counted more than 103,000 fires in the Amazon rainforest, an increase of 16 percent from 2019. Under President Jair Bolsonaro,
who has been in office since January 2019 and is considered a notorious climate skeptic, the destruction of the rainforest in Brazil has increased dramatically. Environmental requirements were weakened under Bolsonaro.
Again and again he opened protected areas for agriculture and mining. Environmentalists also accuse Bolsonaro of favoring illegal clearing.

Rescue workers in the US district of Los Angeles are now instructed not to bring certain patients with a low chance of survival to hospitals because of the overload caused by the corona wave.
If resuscitation on site is unsuccessful in the event of a cardiac arrest, the patients should "not be transported", according to an order from the emergency services.
Many hospitals in the populous district "have reached a crisis point and are already making very tough decisions about patient care," said health department chief Christina Ghaly, the L.A. Times.

Three people familiar with the events told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday that the EU wanted to order an additional 50 to 100 million vaccine units.
Two people said the new cans should be shipped in the third quarter. However, the third source said it could last until the fourth quarter. According to the information, the price will be the same as the 200 million cans ordered in November.

The affiliated commission of the Palestinian Authority (PA) denied that the UAE had contributed efforts to the return of farms in the Jordan Valley, captured by Israel in the war 46 years ago,
to their former Palestinian owners, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported yesterday. Palestinian farmers were allowed to return to their farms on 28 December in the village of Bardala in the Al-Qa'oun valley, in the northern Jordan Valley.
The Emirati news website Al-Ein said, according to Al-Quds Al-Arabi, that the UAE was behind the return of this land to the Palestinians.

who ran in 2015 as a candidate for the Islamic conservative ruling party AKP, on Saturday. As president, Erdogan has the right to appoint rectors.
