Are you ready for more big malaria news? @PMIgov 2021 Strategy centers localization. Its principles include country ownership, #equity, & local leadership. 3 of its 5 focus areas incl community & local initiatives. Read on I want to share this rare gem example of impact.
Many of you saw this tweet that expressed a frustration that many researchers feel when funding is primarily provided to Global North-based institutions to “help” implement an LMIC-based program. 🧵re: a story of our collective #decolonizegh advocacy

Hundreds of you amplified the above tweet which was shared the same day that @rajpanjabi was appointed @PMIgov Global Coordinator. As the founder of @lastmilehealth we told him that we expected better and appealed to Him to improve PMI’s approach to empowering local leadership.
Then @NatureMed published our Open Letter penned by @tjmidega, @Fredros_Inc, @IfyAniebo, @allyeko,& @CKyobutungi. All formidable African scientists who bravely spoke out against colonial practices in science funding. Again, heavily shared by all of you incl, major media outlets♥️
#Leadershipmatters. @PMIgov vowed to do better. They have listened to ideas on how to improve malaria outcomes by partnering with more local institutions. They produced a local-centered strategy & have committed to engage w/ people & orgs doing the work.

The story isn't over. We need to see this strategy operationalized. It will also take time & sustained commitment to overcome systems that have long perpetuated inequity & ineffectiveness in health & development. It's also not just about PMI, but other funders, institutions,
...and African governments. Many folks commented that to change the dynamic we must not only wait for funders & GN institutions to change. But we must change and so we challenged #Africanleadership to invest in their own research, talent, and technology.

This has all occured in the midst of fierce #decolonizeglobalhealth advocacy, research, & coalition building. Thanks to the many folks that continue to work tirelessly at this, who dare to hope, & who build new frontiers in #globalhealth to increase equity. A luta continua✊🏾
The last article is by @DrMishalK & @RenzoGuinto-- You have to create a @ChathamHouse account to read it. Which you should...it's worth it :-)

A hopeful 🧵re: improving #globalhealth through #Decolonizingglobalhealth #antiracism efforts—some examples of positive change:

@DGH_LSHTM & #blacklivesmatter groups gathered signatures from 100's of staff, students, & alumni calling for leadership to examine the school's past
...listen to personal accounts of discrimination.

These groups have influenced the hiring of a postdoc to research it’s #colonial history & legacy. We wrote about Her findings & the calls for change from #DGH & #BLM groups & hope the leadership will act.
Other global #publichealth universities like @dukedecolonize @KarolinskaDGH @EdinburghUni @DecolonizeGh (@HarvardChanSPH) have hosted conferences to critically examine & challenge west/white centric curricula

Africa Is Not Waiting to Be Saved From the Coronavirus
If reporting doesn’t improve, the creativity and agency of swaths of humanity will be lost to history

We needed this article to be written for months. Thank you @Nanjala1-I share some of ur pearls 🧵
thenation.com/article/world/…
"As #Covid19 races its way across #Africa, there are 2 stories happening at once. 1st t is of governments using their armies and militarized police to beat, threaten, and shoot their way to #publichealth."
"2nd is of communities knitting together their meager resources to fill..
"the gap of absent states...of tailors across informal settlements in Nairobi & Mombasa sewing face masks out of scrap fabric & handing them out for free after price gouging by commercial suppliers."

Out today: Our new @TheLancet analysis of #ethics & #politics of #access to #testing #PPE & #Covid19 treatment. We must act now so to ensure that geopolitically powerful countries apply ethical standards & coordinate their procurement to access for #LMICs thelancet.com/journals/lance…
Many #African health systems lack capacity to respond if #COVID19 outbreaks get out of control. So #testing & #tracing are particularly vital.

Unfortunately, testing supplies are increasingly scarce, as #NorthAmerican & #European countries snap up everything on the market.
This mirrors failures in the #AIDS response—when testing & treatment came to #Africa years after it arrived in #US & #Europe, and long after the #pandemic had taken hold. This resulted in tens of millions of unnecessary deaths. @chidodc @DrWilfredoM @RenzoGuinto @paimadhu
