Thread: 3 April 2022: Day 39 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Ukraine beginning to de-mine the areas around Kyiv that they have taken back from #Russia, a process that will take years. Sadly, it's also likely some of these areas will have to be fought over again after Moscow resets and tries again for the capital.
The rewards for the families of fighters from #Chechnya who died fighting #Putin's war on #Ukraine
#Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky "warned in a video address: 'They are mining all this territory. Houses are mined, equipment is mined, even the bodies of dead people'." 1,500+ explosives were found in one day in Dmytrivka, a village west of Kyiv. reuters.com/article/topNew…
#France and #Germany just never believed this was coming. #Putin explained repeatedly his belief in the Slavic and Orthodox unity of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, but they just brushed it off and tried to "bring the conversation back to the present".
#pt: Notable, too, that alongside #Putin's historical-religious claims about the unity of #Russia and #Ukraine, entitling him to this conquest, he lectured the Europeans on "gay culture" corrupting their youth and said Russia would be insulating itself against this menace.
This is correct. There is nothing contingent or aberrant in the scenes we are seeing from recaptured areas around Kyiv. The #Russians tried a lightning strike for #Ukraine's capital; once that failed they reverted to practices we have seen time and again.
#Russia attacking Odessa from the air. Unclear if the expected amphibious landing will ever materialise now.
Story from a 16-year-old girl in Mariupol. She hid in a basement where her mother died and her uncle was killed trying to take the body outside. She talks about living around the smell of corpses, losing faith in God, Russian soldiers raping children. life.nv.ua/ukr/znamenitos…
Great thread. Said this a lot since the war began: #Putin's war is in #Ukraine, but the target was the world order underpinned by the #US. The Russian ruler thought - not unreasonably - that both would fold quickly; he was wrong.
Be interesting to see if #Russia gets far enough even for #Putin to stage a pseudo-victory parade for the Donbas on 9 May. Means little overall, of course: the war will continue since it was and is about extinguishing #Ukraine's existence as a state.
About 600 #Ukrainians are camping in Tijuana, #Mexico, a surge just days after the Biden administration said the #US would accept up to 100,000 refugees from the war. Another 500 are believed to be staying in hotels. 100 are being admitted to the US daily. reuters.com/world/camp-ukr…
This is interesting. Confirmation of what one could have assumed - #Russia was directly overseeing Yanukovych's response to Maidan and encouraged him in the most lethal methods of repression - but it is nice to have the confirmation.
A BBC report from an area #Ukraine has just recaptured from #Russia, showing the discovery of civilians murdered by the Russian army and, it seems, burned in an attempt to cover-up what they had done.
#Britain planning to send single-use "loiter" weapons similar to the U.S. Switchblade drone to #Ukraine. Also plans to send anti-aircraft and anti-ship munitions that could be used against #Russia in the Black Sea. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
It was unclear early on, #Russia being as it is now, and there were substantial Russian anti-war protests - not just in the streets, but even in the Orthodox Church. Now, after state mobilisation measures, it seems clear majority sentiment favours the war.
Again, caveat: this is true *right now*, and might well not have been true at the start. The same process that now makes a majority believe they always supported this war can make them believe they always opposed it if it ends in defeat.
Forcible transfer and using captives for propaganda are both illegal under even the most basic laws and customs of war.
The killing fields in Bucha got a lot of attention yesterday, but the same happened in another village near Kyiv, #Motyzhyn. The picture shows four men and two women, hands bound behind them, shot in the back of the head by #Russian forces.
#pt: Three of the victims killed by #Russian troops in the picture from #Motyzhyn, near Kyiv, seem to have been identified: the head of the village, Olga Sukhenko, and her husband and son. They were abducted on 23 March.
More reports of #Russia's forces using sexual violence against #Ukraine's citizens
#Hungary continuing to undermine the Alliance in every way it dares
"Scorched earth" just doesn't do justice to what #Russia has done and is doing here: "This is what the Russian forces have left behind as they retreat ... the bodies had not been collected due to fears that Russian forces had booby-trapped them."
Good news down in Odessa, and if #Britain can get the anti-ship weapons into #Ukraine quickly it makes the possibility of a #Russian landing that much more remote.
Not fully clear yet this story, but #Germany continues its hesitancy at a moment when what is needed is redoubled effort to make up for the lost time when Berlin told #Ukraine no help would be forthcoming for a lost cause.
#Russian soldier heard in an intercept saying he doesn't believe even a Potemkin victory parade over Donbas could be staged for 9 May given how bad it is. Also complains that "the sergeant fucked off to Russia" on medical grounds once things got bad.
#Russia continuing to find time to destabilise the #Balkans, even as it wars against #Ukraine
#Putin is clearly playing with something that has resonance among Russians when he says #Ukraine is a lost province of a unified and Orthodox Rus. How widespread we just do not know, but it's clearly not marginal.
There are #Russians continuing to protest this war on #Ukraine, at extremely high risk after the transformation of the Putin government into a much "harder" dictatorship in the last few weeks.
There is good reason to think, after what we have seen out of the #Russians, that taking #Ukraine's capital is probably beyond them. That should *not* be understood to mean they will not try again, though, with all the horrors that brings.
Was hesitant about these stories, but agree with this: the evidence is now there. Exactly how widespread is unclear - not something it's easy to put numbers to - but it's systematic enough to say #Russia's troops are using rape as a weapon of war.
All caveats, but does seem at this moment the #Russian government has majority sentiment behind it for the war on #Ukraine.
#Britain trying to avoid this push by the #US, #France, and #Germany to force #Ukraine into a "peace" deal with #Russia that simply resets the cycle - freezes in place Russian gains from aggression, lifts sanctions, foreswears war crimes prosecutions
BBC report outside Kyiv: shows part of the remains of the #Russian column that tried to take #Ukraine's capital in the first-wave blitzkrieg in February, and the horrible toll - looting, destruction, anti-civilian massacres - as the Russians withdrew
At the Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces in Kubinka, near Moscow, Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill said #Russia is "a peace-loving country" with "a very long-suffering people" and "no desire for war or for doing something that could harm others". Image
#France releasing a statement condemning #Russia's atrocities in #Ukraine. Minimal, but all Western states should be doing this.
Hideous scenes in Bucha near Kyiv in the aftermath of the #Russian occupation
Another part of Kirill's sermon, a day after the discovery of the atrocities by #Russian forces in the areas around Kyiv, was to say: Yesterday, we broke the back of fascism, may God help us today, too.
#Russia shelled the Saint Ilyinsky Monastery in the village of Varvarovka in Luhansk in eastern #Ukraine. Shells shattered several windows. The Russian invaders have damaged and destroyed numerous Orthodox houses of worship during this war. Image

This is just desperate from Peter Hitchens: says #Ukraine's most pressing concern is "its festering, universal corruption", #Russia was "provoke[d] ... into an unwise war", and the #US is "keeping the conflict going" to destroy Russia as a power. hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2022/04/peter-…
In eastern #Ukraine, Mariupol is under a fairly intense blackout as #Russia assaults it, but such flashes of clarity as we can get show a savage assault - siege, indiscriminate bombardment, and the deportation of up to 30,000 people to camps in Russia. castbox.fm/episode/id3694…
Zelensky is entirely correct here. For those of us who think of ourselves of friends of Russia, as opposed to the present government, there is a tremendous sadness for the damage this has done to the country, which will last for decades.
Should go without saying, in general and especially from me: the primary sadness is for the Ukrainian victims of rape and murder at the hands of Russia's army, but since this is Twitter and bad-faith engagement is standard, better to spell it out.
#Poland out of patience with all the dithering

Thread: 5 April 2022: Day 41 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
The Pentagon believes #Russia has temporarily reoriented to focus on conquering eastern #Ukraine first, after its attempt to seize the capital in the west was repelled.
The #US briefing suggests that #Russia's switch to conquering #Ukraine east to west (after its attempt for the reverse failed) still includes #Odessa as an immediate target, which the Russians would have to land at from the sea.

Not exactly subtle from #Russia, and quite funny to include #Belarus, which has been stripped of even the minimal sovereignty it had before the war on #Ukraine began.
#Russia's troops ransacked and looted Trostyanets, one of the towns retaken by #Ukraine's army near Sumy in the northeast. Among the victims was an elderly man who fought for the Soviets in Afghanistan, because he wouldn't give up his home.

This has been a depressing aspect of this war. Small, in the grand scheme, sure, but notable and lasting: there are a number of people now who one admired or at least found interesting before this war that have to be written off as terminally unreliable.
There are different streams of the "anti-woke" failure over #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine, with the wilful contrarians who just cannot stand consensus on one side, and the ideologists who hate the liberal West and thus either by conviction or default admire Putin on the other.
Some of the "anti-woke" lunacy over Ukraine has revealed certain people to be quite stupid, but simple stupidity would produce "takes" all over the map and these reliably go in one direction - namely, anti-Ukraine and/or pro-Russia. Kremlin agitprop was pushing at an open door.

From Putin's July 2021 essay: "I said that Russians and Ukrainians were one people—a single whole. These words were not driven by some short-term considerations or prompted by the current political context. It is what I have said on numerous occasions and what I firmly believe."
More from Putin's July 2021 essay: "These territories were referred to as 'Malorossia' (Little Russia). The name 'Ukraine' was used more often in the meaning of the Old Russian word 'okraina' (periphery) ... , referring to various border territories ... "
"... And the word 'Ukrainian', judging by archival documents, originally referred to frontier guards who protected the external borders."

#Russia continues to hold Brittney Griner, an #American professional basketball player, hostage. Ms. Griner was "arrested" on fabricated charges on Feb. 17, clearly intended as leverage during the invasion of #Ukraine, which began exactly a week later.
At least five #Russian Generals have been killed in #Ukraine because Moscow has no choice but to have them at the front: the communications are not working, and morale/discipline are deeply troubled; without Generals on the spot, things would fall apart. foreignpolicy.com/2022/03/21/rus…
