Wow -- #Zawahiri killed in a U.S. drone strike in the #Kabul area over the weekend -- the 1st strike since the #Taliban's takeover of #Afghanistan in August 2021.
BIG blow for #AlQaeda's central leadership, but huge questions about how he was located (or who sold him out).
In Nov 2020, I wrote about #AlQaeda's looming "succession crisis" -- as the group's most likely No.2 (Sayf al-Adel) is based in #Iran, a location that for most AQ affiliates, has resulted in deep distrust.
For years, #AlQaeda has been under a self-reinforcing process of decentralization (& localization) -- whereby the central leadership remained a key guide, but an increasingly irrelevant source of strategic command.
This is reportedly an image from the scene of the strike, in #Kabul's Sherpur neighborhood.
The apparent lack of explosive damage may suggest the U.S. used an R9X 'flying ginsu' missile, which is inert & carries self-deploying blades to kill a target with no collateral damage.
R9X missiles have been deployed a number of times by JSOC in NW #Syria to target senior #AlQaeda figures -- they're extraordinarily precise & have worked to great effect until now.
See here, for example, from June 2020.
I've not seen one used on a building before, though.
Sources in #Afghanistan are now confirming -- this building in which #Zawahiri was killed was owned by Sirajuddin Haqqani, whose son & son-in-law also died in the strike.
Stunning. He's the #Taliban's de facto deputy leader.
NEW -- some fresh thoughts & analysis on the death of #AlQaeda leader Ayman al-#Zawahiri in a U.S. drone strike in #Kabul.
In short: a massive CT victory for the #Biden admin; with profound consequences for #Afghanistan & for AQ's agenda worldwide.
#Biden confirms strike killed #AlQaeda leader #Zawahiri on Saturday -- "he carved a trail of murder & violence against American citizens, diplomats, and interests."
NEW -- #Zawahiri was located in #Kabul "earlier this year" when he moved there "to be with his family."
The strike was approved a week ago. No civilian casualties.
NEW -- senior #Biden admin officials now saying that #Haqqani Network leaders were aware of #Zawahiri's presence in #Kabul.
Immediately after the strike, #Haqqani operatives sealed off the area & relocated #Zawahiri's relatives.
- This is an excellent in-depth look at #HTS by @azelin, a group that's changed markedly over the past 5-7yrs & represents an entirely different challenge than its #AlQaeda-aligned predecessor.
@azelin I've been studying #HTS (& JFS & Nusra before it) closely for 11yrs & as @azelin makes clear, it's existed in its current form for longer than its previous, #AlQaeda-aligned Nusra days.
That evolution dates back to at least early-2015, when I wrote this:
@azelin For an #AlQaeda affiliate born out of #ISIS to become a de facto governing entity that maintains ties to nation states & cooperates with INGOs is no insignificant thing.
Within its NW zone, #HTS has arguably been the most successful anti-#ISIS & AQ actor in #Syria -- but...
"It's important that we do everything in our power to keep cross-border assistance flowing into #Syria.. cross-line is clearly not enough.. I will do everything I can do expand the [existing] mandate."
#Russia's invasion of #Ukraine catalyzed a massive U.S. & #NATO pressure campaign -- sanctions, weapons etc.
Good.
For years in #Syria, #Russia bombed hospitals, IDP camps & schools; besieged 100,000s; covered for CW use & more.
The response? Nothing. Not even x1 sanction.
I know it's been said before, but I still find it hard to wrap my head around just how cold & risk averse the U.S. & allies were over #Russia's role in Syria.
And the costs are just staggering -- not just to #Syria & its neighborhood, but to the world at large. What an error.
In #Syria, the US line was it didn't matter & *any* push-back would risk WW3 with #Russia.
The risk in #Ukraine was infinitely higher, yet our action was swift & firm -- & effective.
The distinction is hard to swallow, especially w. 500,000 dead & 12 million displaced 11yrs on.
Amid optimism over #Ukraine, let's also remember the invasion still happened -- 11 million civilians have been displaced; towns/cities turned to rubble; & 10,000s civilians killed.
#Putin rode a wave of impunity we paved for years prior -- it'll take a long time to redraw norms.
For #Russia, this war didn't begin 2 months ago -- it began in 2014. This is the latest phase in a long war.
Like #Syria, a nationwide campaign has proven untenable, but pivoting to a piecemeal campaign can create more sustainable conditions in which #Ukraine faces the pressure.
