Thread: 4 August 2022: Day 162 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Ukraine's missiles/artillery continues to target #Russia's military personnel clusters, supply bases, and ammunition depots, straining RU combat logistics. First Ukrainian ship at the Bosphorus. RU using pyramidal radar reflectors to try to avoid HIMARS
Putin speech on 3 August declared "liberal-globalist American egocentrism" over and a "truly multipolar world" dawning, one not based on "self-serving rules" but on "international law, ... sovereignty of nations and civilisations, ... democracy, justice, and equality" (lol).
"Ofgem [#Britain's energy regulator] has confirmed that the energy price cap will be updated quarterly, rather than every six months, also warning that households face a 'very challenging winter'." news.sky.com/story/very-cha…
The continued problem of not recognising the #Soviets as #Nazi collaborators who jointly started the Second World War.
30,000 people have crossed from #Finland into #Russia in the last week. Border guards have confiscated things that "can promote Russia's industrial and military capabilities", such as technical navigation equipment, like chartplotters and sonar-type items. yle.fi/news/3-12561927
"#Russia will introduce duty-free shops selling Western imports to diplomats for foreign [hard] currency in a practice that will remind many Russians of the infamous beryozka stores that epitomised official privilege during the #Soviet era." theguardian.com/world/2022/aug…
Of the man lessons #Russia's war on Ukraine should transfer to dealing with #China, the big one should be the gap between what CCP has on paper (and what its leaders believe they have) and the reality produced by their ramshackle system.
The damage First Lady Sabina Higgins did to #Ireland is not of a kind that can be undone: it will be remembered that when the crunch came, she advised #Ukraine to accept partition and leave large parts of the country under the rule of rapists and murderers thejournal.ie/readme/sabina-…
Amnesty International living down to the very worst things said about it. An organisation that long ago lost its way.
#pt: Ukraine's President Zelensky addressed the @Amnesty International report that "tries to amnesty the terrorist state and shift responsibility from the aggressor to the victim" as the first thing in his speech tonight. Condemns its "immoral selectivity".
#pt: About half of the speech tonight by #Ukraine's President Zelensky was about @Amnesty International, says it is contributing to #Russia's disinformation campaign with its "manipulative reports" and shares in the "responsibility for the death of [Ukrainian] people".
#pt: Amnesty International assisted in the propaganda output of #Russia's Embassy in Britain today, the same Embassy that a few days ago publicly advocated the massacre of #Ukrainian prisoners-of-war.
The secretary-general of Amnesty International dismissing the critics of the organisation's absurd report on #Ukraine as "trolls". Highly amusing to see that Callamard believes Amnesty is accepted anywhere as having "impartiality": it has always been a deeply politicised group.
#pt: The best that can be said of Amnesty International is that the narrow focus on "human rights" blinds them to the reality of war and violence, but there are too many examples of the organisation's selectivity and ideological crusades to accept that as the only problem.
Credit to Nancy Pelosi: political gestures increase the intangibles for #Taiwan like resolve as it faces #China, which, as #Ukraine has shown in the war with #Russia, count perhaps more than anything when the chips really are down.
#Russia raining missiles on Mykolaiv, the province adjacent to the occupied southeast of #Ukraine, again today.
Oleksiy Arestovych is an interesting guy in general and he's generally sound. Clearly correct in this instance that what #America, and the West, needs is the Cold Warriors who waged that long struggle with a mixture of ruthlessness and idealism now lacking
#pt: In "Witness" (1952), Whittaker Chambers remarks on those who insist on appeasing Moscow to preserve "peace" and prevent "World War III": "like most people who have substituted ... delusion for reality, they became hysterical whenever the root of their delusion was touched".
#pt: Whittaker Chambers had been a devoted Communist and member of the CPUSA/Soviet spy apparatus since 1925. In 1937 he came back to us - believing he was joining the losing side losing side, but that it is better to die in the Western cause than to live under Communism.
Another entirely pointless atrocity by #Russia in eastern #Ukraine, in Toretsk in the Bakhmut district of the Donetsk Oblast.
One of the reasons the #Soviet army behaved so badly as it conquered #Germany in 1945 was the disbelief and then rage of the conscripts at finding how much better off the Germans were than their utopian realm. Plus ca change ...
#Canada sending up to 225 troops to #Britain to help train #Ukraine's Army. reuters.com/world/canada-h…
Another senior #Russian officer, Major General Konstantin Fedorenko, has allegedly been killed in #Ukraine. express.co.uk/news/world/165…
The #Ukraine team at @Amnesty International, led by @OPokalchuk, has publicly protested the report released earlier today, having worked internally to prevent such flawed material being published.
It's nice to know Vladimir Solovyov is as awful personally as he is politically toxic.
#Japan has performed very well during the #Ukraine crisis, quick to realise and react to the fact that #Russia and #China are a single threat, rallying support for #Taiwan, among other things.
The weakness of the #Biden administration in dealing with enemy states should not really be a shock at this stage - it still fears "escalation" after #Russia launched a full-scale war - but this still seems like a new low with #China.
#American women's basketball star Brittney Griner, taken hostage in #Russia on the eve of the #Ukraine invasion, has been "sentenced" to nine years in prison and fined 1 million rubles ($16,400) for drugs smuggling after a disgusting show trial in Moscow. edition.cnn.com/2022/08/04/eur…
Selfies from a stolen mobile telephone identified a #Russian soldier, Daniil Frolkin, of the 64th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, known for the atrocities in Bucha, who later committed another war crime, murdering a civilian in Andriyivka. slidstvo.info/english-storie…

There has been some surprise about Amnesty International's report attacking #Ukraine for defending itself against #Russia, but, under the banner of "human rights", the group has been a hard-Left, anti-American/Western activist organisation for quite some time. A short 🧵
#Israel and her supporters have been, entirely fairly, most prominent in saying "we told you so" about Amnesty International. When AI jumped on the "apartheid" slander earlier this year, they were quite clear it was because it was popular with the far-Left
In calling #Israel an "apartheid" and racist state, making tendentious if inexplicit comparisons with the Nazis, Amnesty International was channelling the #Soviet active measures campaign from the 1970s, one of its most successful such operations.

Thread: 5 August 2022: Day 163 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update focuses on with the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant #Russia occupies. Moscow seem to be using the plant to rest troops, since it has protected status and #Ukraine won't attack it. Are using adjacent regions to shell the western bank of the Dnipro River. Image
Seems #Ukraine's HIMARS have been in action in Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson Oblast, destroying an ammunition depot.

Thread: 3 August 2022: Day 161 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Ukraine likely disabled the rail link between #Russian-occupied Kherson and Crimea; the Russians can repair it, but will remain vulnerable. Russia has begun using civilian ferries to cross the Dnipro after the destruction of the Antonovsky Bridge. Image
Instructive: #Germany’s former chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, goes to Moscow and meets #Russia's ruler Vladimir Putin, comes back insisting on the need for "peace", i.e. a ceasefire that freezes Russian gains in place and gives the Russian Army a break.

Latest @DefenceHQ update focuses on the de facto annexation of #Belarus by #Russia: notes the missiles fired from Belarus at #Ukraine, the escalating repression, concludes: "likely indicate that [Lukashenko] has become almost wholly dependent on Russia."
#Russia's "Wagner" unit is encouraging illegal migration across from #Libya to #Italy. This causes immediate chaos for border authorities and then, when it leads to broader social tensions, the Russians will exploit those, too.

Thread: 30 July 2022: Day 157 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: likely that #Ukraine has "repelled small scale Russian assaults" around Donetsk city. "Highly likely" that #Russia has "established two pontoon bridges in Kherson. Russia is tightening control in the occupied zones to prepare for annexation announcement.
Oleksiy Arestovych argues #Russia putting out the video of castrating #Ukrainian soldiers, something known about for a long time, is designed to provoke a reaction, allowing Moscow to argue its a two-sided barbarian war the West must stop with a ceasefire.

Thread: 29 July 2022: Day 156 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update is on the "Wagner" unit, says its "new level of integration [with the #Russian Army in eastern #Ukraine] further undermines the Russian authorities' long-standing policy of denying links between PMCs and the Russian state". Which is British understatement Image
The #Biden administration continues denying #Ukraine weapons, in this case ATACMS surface-to-surface missiles, because of its deranged fear of #Russia "escalating", as if that is an actual Thing at this point.
