Beatings, electric shocks, stress positions, and rape – Welcome to political detention in Sisi’s Egypt hrw.org/news/2017/09/0…
The Torture Assembly Line: 9 illustrations represent a typical arrest & use of torture, which takes different forms hrw.org/report/2017/09…
1. Security forces, rarely wearing identifying uniforms, arrest someone without a warrant or explanation
2. Detainees are bound and blindfolded, then taken to National Security offices or police stations
3. Security officers strip suspect to underwear, question him & present the alleged crime. If suspect denies allegations, the torture begins
4. Torture often begins with electrocutions. They shock your head, armpits, even genitals
5. Often the torture escalates into one of two types of stress positions. Here the suspect is hung by handcuffs from a door
6. The second stress position is called the “chicken” or “grill", resembling a chicken on a rotisserie spit. The pain is excruciating
7. Sometimes the torture goes even further. One detainee told @hrw the Cairo police repeatedly raped him with a stick
8. One detainee said National Security officers in Giza pulled out one of his fingernails
9. “I stayed in this police station for 46 days. No matter how much I tell you I won’t be able to give u a full idea of what happened.” Omar
Since the 2013 military coup, authorities have arrested or charged probably at least 60,000 people
This torture by security forces, widespread and systematic, probably amounts to a crime against humanity hrw.org/news/2017/09/0…
