(Movie Review Thread) I just saw Peter Jackson's new film They Shall Not Grow Old, a documentary on World War I. The film is technically breathtaking, but I was shocked to see a film on WWI that is completely apolitical. It's about political mass slaughter but it avoids politics!
They Shall Not Grow Old does not even try to explain why WWI was fought — let alone why it was an entirely preventable, pointless inter-imperialist bloodbath that led to the unnecessary deaths of tens of millions of (almost entirely poor) people!
Instead the whole point of the film is to humanize the soldiers fighting in WWI and show what day-to-day life was for them. And that's great; it's important to see the mind-boggling horrors of WWI and trench warfare. But that must be done *in historical and political context*.

I just saw @ViceMovie, and it's brilliant. The film shows how well-made narratives can capture the zeitgeist and politics of an era not only more captivatingly but even more accurately than documentaries. Because it's not just about the facts; it's about the tone and attitude.
.@GhostPanther masterfully captured the essence of Cheney and the Bush admin -- and the facts, yes, but more importantly the spirit.

Christian Bale and Amy Adams used their bodies as instruments, like musical virtuosi, to forge a sick world in which reactionary power intoxicates
Vice does much more than just retell the story of Cheney/Bush's crimes; it offers profound human insight into how right-wing aspiring autocrats think about and see the world, and their place in it

By humanizing blood-soaked Dick Cheney, it makes his crimes all the more monstrous

2. This is a big deal and signals what the Trump Admin cares -- and doesn't care -- about. It cares more about separating, detaining, and deporting immigrant families than it does the health and safety of our communities, than it does responding to natural disasters.
3. But it's not a surprise, nor is it unsusual. In fact, earlier this year DHS transferred an additional $200M to support Trump's mass deportation machine. @SenJeffMerkley deserves a shout out for helping to shed light on all of this.

An underemphasized point about the self-serving op ed is how wrong it is in the claim that Trump "shows little affinity for ideals espoused by conservatives." On by far their biggest issue, tax cuts for the rich, the president has been their dream. 1/ nyti.ms/2CyF3Jh
What about other “conservative ideals”? Abortion? Gun control? Regulation? Military spending? Court appointments? In all these ways, he has been probably the most hardline conservative president in our history. 2/
On issues that divide conservatives, he has picked a side. But the side he has picked ob immigration, trade, and foreign policy accords with the fetishism of “toughness” that the right has long valorized. 3/

(1) Mr. Magoo huh? At first glance Trump seems unhappy with AG Sessions, and maybe that's so.

Has anybody ever seen Mr. Magoo? How do all of the "episodes" turn out? Is Trump really making fun of Sessions?

No! and I'll tell you why.
(2) First, let's look at Quincy Magoo! His portrait shows an experienced man, among other things. Here's a shot of the Wikipedia page on Quincy.
(3) "Quincy Magoo (or simply Mr. Magoo) is a
cartoon character created at the UPA
animation studio in 1949."

Sessions, was born in the late forties too. I imagine, if Quincy was real, they would be around the same age, and maybe even friends too.
