Brexit and the parable of the boiling frog. THREAD
We've moved a long way from: "There will be no downside to Brexit, only a considerable upside" (David Davis). /1
We are now actively planning for a "no deal" that will be a "very, very bad outcome" (Hammond). /2
The temperature has changed, almost without us noticing. But now we may be about to notice. /3
If the tone of this Times report is right then we are about to turn the temperature up sharply. /4
Some pro-Remain organisations believe we can deliver radical change (remaining) by moderate means (more campaigning). /5
I think they're wrong. But if we are perceived to haved walked out on negotiations things could change very quickly. /6
We will see huge economic disruption. Not forecasts - but the actuality: jobs will go. /7
The pound will take another tumble: inflation will rise and living standards will be hit. /8
The Government's economic forecasts will be washed away. Get ready for austerity on stilts. /9
The Government has hidden from the public its analysis of what 'no deal' means. But a walk out means the public will taste the reality. /10
And all the while, this key fact will remain true: for the next 18 months, under EU law, we will still be in the EU. /11
And, as many will point out, we have it in our power to stop the chaos: at any time we can ask to change our minds and remain. /12
Turn the temperature up sharply and the frog hops out. Showing the public what 'no deal' means will change the political debate. /13
Will the Government be able to keep the lid on a public feeling the heat for a full 18 months? Absolutely no chance. /Ends
