① Thread 👇🏻 On the practicalities of presenting at a conference using iOS Keynote on an iPad… if you want to branch out from using Mac.
② Context: Two Keynote.app files created on Mac, ages ago. Heavy on builds, Magic Move etc. 60+MB each. National Drs conference.
③ Have *always* presented on a MacBook. Never considered iOS, until #iOS11 multi-tasking (on a 10.5” iPad Pro) got me interested.
④ That, and my latest laptop being a 2016 MacBook Pro with touchbar. And USB-C 🙄 Thinks: one new dongle’s much the same as another, surely?
⑤ Ever mindful of having disaster scenario backups, I had a note to self: “Make sure you could present from iPad (or iPhone 😱) if needed.”
⑥ This led to me opening the Keynote file in iOS. I was pleasantly surprised by the feature parity that now exists between macOS & iOS 😃
⑦ Creation of Magic Moves aside, you can do everything with minuscule timing of slide builds in iOS. And dragging content around is a dream.
⑧ I’m still not sure I’d necessarily want to *create* a complex presentation in iOS, but for editing & updating presenter notes, it was 💯
⑨ The biggest hassle I’ve always had, using a MacBook, has been the connection between that & my iPhone, to use (invaluable) Keynote Remote.
⑩ The stress of clinging to a 💻📲 connection on shitty conference hall multi-base wifi = considerable. It has bombed more than once, mid-talk
⑪ In recent years I’d taken to creating an (unsecure now, since OS X ?@ismh) ad-hoc network between the two, but even this wasn’t perfect.
⑫ Imagine my surprise/joy when I learned you can control an iPad Keynote with your iPhone (and vice versa!) using just BlueTooth 👏🏻
⑬ This alone convinced me to try it… live… at a big conference. The experience was flawless & fast. I never once feared the connection.
⑭ It didn’t even matter which device was or wasn’t on the wifi (incl. with VPN) – it just worked. I stopped checking/caring after a while.
⑮ (Incidentally, @fraserspeirs 🙏🏻 recommended AirPlane Mode + Bluetooth back on, but sorry to report I couldn’t get it to connect that way.)
⑯ All of this aside, if you’re looking for one excuse to give it a go, here are two words for you to consider: Battery. Life.
O.M.G. 😳
⑰ I’d spent more than an hour with the Keynote live on a screen then 30 mins email form sign ups on the same device, screen burning 🔥: 76% 🔋
⑱ (My iPhone, conversely, was wallowing around the mid-50’s, despite being in Low Power Mode 🙄)
⑲ In contrast to presenting-with-MacBook + omnipresent-charger, I didn’t worry *once* that I’d have to plug anything in, other than iPhone.
⑳ Only now, in retrospect, do I recall the VGA dongle had a female Lightning charge port. It never entered my head that I’d have to use it.
㉑ Even if I did, I wasn’t tied to wall sockets. I was carrying a RAVPower 26800mAh charger (amzn.to/2y2ZYwx) that I barely dented.
㉒ The whole weekend, I used my MacBook for 2 tasks: copying audio recordings via USB & subsequently editing it with @RogueAmoeba’s Fission.
㉓ (*Both* of these tasks could have been done later… I was just getting ahead with work, on the way home.)
㉔ Other findings: @Dropbox + Keynote/Files.app on iOS didn’t play so nicely. After some edits, I got conflicted copies appearing, so…
㉕ I used iCloud instead (=not normal for me). That was solid, but had a habit of making me unnecessarily download copies every now & again 😑
㉖ In the end I copied to “On My iPad” & never looked back. Replacing the iCloud copy whenever I’d made edits seemed a really fast process.
㉗ Last technical bit: If you use custom fonts on the Mac, make sure you’ve got what you need on your iPad too (see )
㉘ Conclusion: I’M SOLD! It was such a great experience. I walked in with an iPad in my hand, a phone in my pocket and I just got on with it.
㉙ ps Pro Tip: Set yourself an alarm 10 minutes before your presentation to turn on Do Not Disturb on every device you own. 😁 /ends
