I cannot believe we are relitigating this dumb-as-dogshit, debunked Politico article *yet again*. politico.com/story/2016/04/…

1/ Ever since this moronic piece was published, it keeps being used by conspiracy theorists to assert Clinton lied about helping state Dems.

2/ The basic premise was, money Hillary raised earmarked for state purposes was supposedly being “kicked back” to the DNC and Hillary.

3/ Some conspiracy theorists, like the always idiotic H.A. Goodman, even tried to claim that this constituted criminal money laundering.

4/ The article is cited in @donnabrazile’s new book, and now Trump read the blurb and says he wants DOJ to prosecute it as money laundering!

5/ This article is absolute bullshit to anyone who understands how campaign finance law works.

Because it overlooks a simple, glaring fact.

6/ Namely: check the date the article was published. April 2016.

The primary wasn’t over yet. Hillary wasn’t the nominee yet.

7/ That means she literally *couldn’t* allocate money from the fundraising committee yet. She had to wait until she had the nomination.

8/ As soon as she *did* have the nomination — which was two months after this article came out — that money was disbursed to state Dems.

9/ You can go to opensecrets.org & clearly see hundreds of millions from HVF to states. (h/t @ahumorlessfem)

10/ Now it is true that this happened after the Politico article came out.

But this is goddamn how campaign finance law works.

11/ Politico should employ journalists who know the law well enough to have realized this wasn’t an unusual or contradictory arrangement.

12/ Also, Brazile, as a former chair of the DNC, should have known the law well enough to have realized this before writing her book.

13/ Too late now of course. We kicked the hornet’s nest yet again and the truth doesn’t matter. Because it never matters apparently. END
