/ Okay this thread is about the "Balai Polis" scam I suspect some scammers tried on me today.
/ Around 1125am, a woman voice from 03 55103910 calls me asking to speak to Aaron Tang.
/ She claims to be from "Balai Polis Shah Alam," saying that someone reported a police case against me in Balai Polis Johor Bahru. The crime: Hit and run (langgar lari) case
/ Date of event: 4th November. Apparently someone booked a rented car in JB with my name and then hit someone and then drove off.
/ Of course, I haven't been to JB recently and I haven't lost my IC recently too. Plus if the crime is in JB then Why The F is Balai Polis Shah Alam calling me?
/ So the lady says "You need to come to JB today to help solve this case. Where are you now?" I say "I'm in KL."
/ And of course she says "Okay if you cannot come to JB, then I will pass the line to my officer in Balai Polis JB so you can deal with them." [ALARM BELLS in my head go off]
/ Luckily I've read about scammer methods before. One famous one is when they call you claiming they're from a bank. And there's a fraudulent transaction in your credit card.
/ But guess what, if you want to solve it quickly and easily, "Let me transfer you to an officer in Bank Negara to help you." [ALARM BELLS]
/ So if you get transferred to "Bank Negara Officer" then he/she will ask you for personal details like bank account number, IC number etc, and then shortly after -- YOUR MONEY DISAPPEARS
/ Anyway, when "Miss Balai Polis Shah Alam" said wanted to transfer me to another officer, it sounded too much like this Bank Negara scam shit.
/ And I was in a bit of mood for trolling. So I say "Oh ya ka? No problem I can go to JB now. Who is the officer there I should speak to and what is the case reference number?"
/ "Miss Balai Polis Shah Alam" is dumbfounded. She can't tell me which officer in JB to speak to and can't tell me what case number.
/ She just repeats her offer to connect me to "Officer from Balai Polis JB." Again I repeat saying I don't wanna speak to him.
/ "Why don't you want to speak to him?" she insists. "Because it's not secure. How the F do I know if he's really the Balai Polis?" I ask miss Scammer.
/ "Okay, so you will not cooperate in this case ya?" threatens miss Scammer. Scamming tactics 101: if your target is suspicious or asks many questions -- threaten them to make them scared.
/ "No, but if you tell me which officer I should speak to and what case number then I will solve it myself. I'll go to JB right now if I have to."
/ She can't give a good answer so I give my most cheery professional "ok thank you, bye." and put down the phone. Kinda wish I added the b***h word too.
/ Few thoughts: Firstly I googled 03 55103910 and it's apparently really Balai Polis Shah Alam number. But I think these scammers have found a way to hijack the number so it appears as caller ID.
/ But I also found a scam detection website saying that this number has been reported in a few scams before. Always same story: Kes Langgar Lari in Johor using rented car.
/ I strongly don't believe it is PDRM procedure to suddenly call you and say "you have to go to JB today." Should be some kinda Surat rasmi to saman if true right?
/ And the way she responds when I asks questions is very suspicious. Why does she keep wanting me to talk to "the officer"? Very scammish la...
/ One of my Twitter friends says this same case has happened to her before too. If you transfer to "Balai Polis JB" then they'll ask you for bank account info and stuff. [ALARM BELLS]
/ My dear friends, please be careful cause there are a lot of mofos out there trying to scam you and your money. If in doubt, perhaps call a trusted friend and go to a real Balai Polis together in person?
/ Same goes for bank/email related scams. Don't immediately react out of fear, but take a breath and think carefully first? Again, ask a wise friend if unsure.
/ Don't simply click any links in ur email just because got LHDN logo, and don't simply talk to people who claim they're from Bank Negara.
/ Lastly, let's support each other and keep exposing all these scams. Don't let the bad guys win. Take care and stay safe out there guys!
