Today @IndianMedAssn has called for a nationwide 12 hr strike to protest against National Medical Council Bill to be introduced in Parliament today.

2. Some good stuff - Old Medical Council of India will be shut down and 4 new bodies will replace it. This will bring in more specific expertise and faster decision making.
3. All four bodies will have few doctors and remaining all members (overwhelming majority) to be nominated by central government. States have little or no say
4. Private medical colleges get a free hand to add seats. 40% of which will be charged at will. Creating a clear income based divide that is worse than present situation.
5. As government nominated members will be in charge, serving ONLY government agenda, corruption and sycophancy will be rampant. Government's faith in Bureaucrats to sort everything out is misplaced in highly specialized fields like healthcare
6. AYUSH practitioners will be allowed to practice modern medicine with "bridge course". This ignores fundamental differences in science, training & practice. Will you allow a commercial vehicle driver to fly a plane after a short"bridge course" bause they are both just vehicles?
7. Exit exam is a good point to ensure good quality of training. But, government's expertise in conducting exams is fraught with mostly misses.
8. As a patient you WILL get affected -
a. by getting moneybags as your pvt college, special quota doctors
b. untrained AYUSH doctors legally practicing modern medicine
c. rampant corruption at all levels of medical education and license.
d. political agenda driven healthcare.

9. All suggestions sent to NMC drafting committee are probably lying in the bin somewhere. Government has pushed ahead its original draft without any significant changes to avoid this weaknesses.
