Ok after another frustrating day in Brexitland the penny has finally dropped for me /1
I’ve spent months engaging with the tedious detail required to make Brexit work and wondering why Leave just waves this all away /2
Because it seems like if you want Brexit to happen, you need to engage with the policy detail. And it’s alarming how little Brexiteers want to do that (generally) /3
And finally I understand this: the issue isn’t EU rules - though this is very much their bugbear /4
The issue is just rules and detail generally. The modern world is complex. The EU - which largely represents this - embodies this complexity /5
And the Brexiteer delusion is that by getting rid of the EU they can live in a simpler world /6
That’s why almost every question to provide a specific example of a rule they’d like to change is pointless. It isn’t the rules in detail. It’s just rules in general /7
That’s why Brexiteers seem helpless now they need to come up with their own policy solutions. Because policy requires detail. And Brexit is about denying the need for detail /8
In Brexitland everything will be fine specifically because it’s a fantasy land with no detail. /9
Asking a Brexiteer to be specific about detail is like asking a whale to describe a space rocket /10
Brexit is about non detail. That’s its promise. It largely has nothing to do with the EU. It just wants a simpler world /11
Alas this world no longer exists, which is why Brexit will fail. But it means that trying to engage on detail is pointless /12
And why things will almost certainly get worse and the UK is likely to crash out of the EU with no detail /13
Because in Brexitland, ‘no deal’ means ‘no regulations’ or ‘only whatever rules I like.’ It’s a total fantasy. But this is Brexit. /14
And that’s why the two worlds simply don’t understand each other. It’s deeply sad but it looks like a largely pointless dialogue. ENDS #FBPE
