We want to start today's FREE information session by appreciating all those who have joined us every Friday, supported us by spreading words about what we do, and sent us words of encouragement. We appreciate your time and goodwill & hope to serve you more! #ImmigrationCorner
We've spent the last 2weeks talking about the Express Entry Program for skilled immigrants. For our friends who need assistance registering & preparing for IELTS test in Nigeria, please contact the number in the image below for your registration & preparation. #ImmigrationCorner
Today we are discussing the opportunities available in Canada for international students. The admission requirements, scholarship opportunities, working while on a study permit and staying back in Canada to live and work after graduation. #ImmigrationCorner
Just as Canada is now a choice destination for skilled immigrants, the country is also attracting an increasing number of international students from abroad, including students from neighboring United States of America. Details here 👉🏿 tgam.ca/2CDGOj5 #ImmigrationCorner
As of 2016, there were 414,946 study permit holders in Canada, with more than 250,000 new students entering Canada every year. For these students, there are only 96 universities in Canada, making admission into the universities very competitive! #ImmigrationCorner
In 2015 alone, 223,000 new study permits and renewals were issued. #ImmigrationCorner
The list of top 20 countries of citizenship for students as of 2016 is below, and many of these students come to Canada because of the quality education, affordable tuition, ability to work while studying & the opportunity to live and work after graduation #ImmigrationCorner.
Admission requirements may vary according to program, university & level of study. For undergraduate studies, high school transcripts & English language proficiency (in form of a standardized test if your first language is not English) are important requirements #ImmigrationCorner
Unlike graduate programs, undergraduate studies have limited funding for international students, but prospective students can contact the universities they are applying to and confirm available opportunities. Our focus today will mainly be for graduate programs #ImmigrationCorner
Grad program admissions are done using a combination of these 6 factors
1) Grade Average
2) Proposed research [for thesis-based programs]
3) Statement of purpose/intent
4) the CV, showing professional experience, etc
5) Recommendations
6) English Proficiency #ImmigrationCorner
Proof of English proficiency is required for some international students when primary language and language of instruction/examination for their previous Degrees were not in English. Such students may be required to write standardized tests like TOEFL or IELTS. #immigrationCorner
Additional standardized tests like GRE or GMAT may also be required for certain professional programs like MBA. Please decide your program of interest, search for universities offering them and note the specific admission requirements for the university/program #immigrationCorner
Grad programs are also more competitive due to the limited number of space. A 70-75% cumulative Grade average is mostly expected. This is however the minimum, as applicants are evaluated using higher grades, based on the competitiveness of applications received #ImmigrationCorner
In most (if not all) of the universities, serious consideration is mostly given to the cumulative average in the last 2 years of undergraduate study (i.e 300 and 400 level for a 4 year course), and the percentage grade in the Masters degree (for PhD applicants) #ImmigrationCorner
A high cumulative grade average in the last 2 years will give an applicant a better chance of admission & funding. Scholarships are generally based on academic attainment & potential for further academic studies or research. We therefore recommend 80% & above! #ImmigrationCorner
Canadian universities place high expectations on research for grad students. Most funding arrangements are tied to being a research student (in a thesis based program). Course-based programs may attract funding, but such opportunities are also very limited. #ImmigrationCorner
In most applications, you do not need to apply separately for funding as an incoming international Graduate student. Funding decisions are made with the admission review & applicants are notified of available funding arrangement after admission has been offered #ImmigrationCorner
Depending on the funding awarded, some universities or programs may also tie the funding to some service such as Teaching or Research Assistantship, but the hours you work for that would not affect the number of hours you are eligible to work as a student #ImmigrationCorner
In addition to University funding, other agencies offering scholarships/funding are:
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) bit.ly/1sR16J9
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) bit.ly/1vWHsij #ImmigrationCorner
Mackenzie King - bit.ly/1EJzrqF
Trudeau Foundation - bit.ly/2b4nvFT
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) - bit.ly/1WspWUL
MITACS- bit.ly/2p1RYfw
And funding arrangements made available by the provincial governments. #ImmigrationCorner
Adding to the grades, the quality of other documents is important! Applicants may have first-class grades & still not get admitted because of a resume not detailed enough, statement lacking originality, proposed research not feasible, or generic recommendations #ImmigrationCorner
Applicants are advised to work on the quality of other documents as well. Write original statement of purpose, contact your referees early enough, structure your resume according to the expected standard of the university you are applying to, sell yourself well! #ImmigrationCorner
Canadian Universities have Career advancement centres with samples of their expected CVs online. A Google search of the University & 'resume/cv guide' will lead to available resources. For example, University of Toronto resume guide 👉🏿 bit.ly/2sJSbWI #ImmigrationCorner
In addition to this, some thesis-based program may require you to secure a potential supervisor before applying. Contact faculty members listed on their program page and share your well-structured research proposal with them (via email) as soon as possible! #ImmigrationCorner
Application for Fall-term admission open in September and run until Jan/Feb/Mar of the resumption year in most schools. Then admission decisions are made by March/April/May leaving you with about 4-6 months to sort out the Visa before the September resumption. #ImmigrationCorner
Although the popular resumption term for International students is Fall (September), other programs/universities may have very limited offers for other resumption terms (Winter/Summer). Please contact your program/university of interest to ascertain this. #ImmigrationCorner
Most schools also no longer expect you to send paper copies of transcripts to the University before admission. They need you to scan and upload copies online with other documents. This saves you some money as original copies may only be required upon resumption #ImmigrationCorner
You will, however, be required to pay the non-refundable application fees. Application fees could be between $90 to $150 depending on the university/program you are applying to. This is the only official fee required until the admission decision is made. #ImmigrationCorner
Except otherwise noted, international students are also eligible to work 20 hours per week during school terms & full-time during breaks. They are also eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit to work in Canada after their studies 👉🏾 bit.ly/2nKyOY8 #ImmigrationCorner
The work obtained through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program may help support students' application to become a permanent resident of Canada (under the Canadian Experience Class) or other programs under the Express Entry System #ImmigrationCorner
Upon graduation, students who already have sufficient years of work experience from their home country may also be eligible for other programs under the Express Entry system.Such students would receive extra points for the programs they have completed in Canada #ImmigrationCorner
We hope you find our FREE information useful & prepare yourself to take advantage of this opportunity made available by the Government of Canada to study, live, work and contribute to the economy of Canada as a student. Permit us to end today's session here. #ImmigrationCorner
