Soldiers wear the same uniforms, pass through the same experience, speak the same language and obey the same commands.

So soldiers tend to mistake "uniformity" for "unity".

And this is one of Nigeria's problems - we've been governed by soldiers for decades.
If there is no "diversity", there is no need for "unity". "Uniformity" on the other hand, assumes that people can be forced to think and act the same way - so they will be governed the same way; irrespective of differences in local culture.
When the British governed Nigeria, they did it with a better appreciation of Nigeria's diversity than we've done post-1970.

For example, the way policing was done in the Northern Region was a bit different from how it was done in the Eastern Region.
