1/ GTM Research's 2017 Year In Review U.S. Energy Storage Monitor was published this morning. Let's dig into some of the key takeaways.
2/ Quarter-over-quarter the market grew 46%, with 62 MW deployed in Q4 2017. YOY the market was down 56%, though note Q4 2016 was especially large thanks to the Aliso Canyon deployments.
3/ Things get even more interesting if we look at the market in MWh terms, where we saw a 126% jump QOQ. Also, in MWh terms the BTM market (resi and C&I) made up 77% of deployments in Q4 2017 (Q3 2017 had a BTM share of 56%).
4/ Top Residential Markets in Q4 2017:
1. California: SGIP pushing the market. TOU rates around the corner!
2. Other Markets: Lots of interest in storage for resilience in places like Northeast and Southeast
3. Hawaii: CSS growing quickly! Saw an 18x YOY jump in storage permits
5/ Top Non-Residential (C&I) markets in 2017:
1. California: SGIP plus grid services equals market leader
2. Other Markets: growing interest in demand charge mgmt. applications across the U.S.
3. New York: seeing some activity via BQDM and demand charge mgmt.
6/ Top Front-of-the-Meter markets in 2017:
1. Texas
2. California
3. Arizona
Keep an eye on those utility IRPs! Lots of them including storage for long-term resource planning!
7. Everyone is talking about Section 201 affecting solar, but it will affect storage as well, though to a lesser extent. More and more solar developers are turning to storage as a value-add and expect more solar-plus-storage projects in 2018 and beyond.
8. And where is the market going? By 2023 GTM Research expects a 3.3 GW annual market. U.S. market will cross 1 GW annual market threshold next year (2019).
9. Of course, there's a lot more detail to dig into in the full report. 2017 was an exciting year for storage, and 2018 is already shaping up to be even more interesting! greentechmedia.com/research/repor…
4a/ My 4th tweet noted the top residential markets in Q4 2017; those three (California, Hawaii, All Others) were also the top residential markets for 2017 as a whole.
