I find blockchains ugly despite also finding them fascinating. While logically decentralized, in practice the coordination and centralziation necessary to maintain a blockchain deprives it of it's beauty (for now at least).
I own some bitcoin (mostly donated by cool people, which I mostly use to buy groceries with), and some litecoin (from a bug bounty, not really sure what to do with it), and some zcash (because it is cool)
I sometimes rant about cryptocurrencies, mostly because the space is made up of people who don't understand security economics, or just regular economics and the majority of my research centers around rebalancing incentives to make good, secure, privacy-preserving systems.
I'm much more interested in anonymity and decentralized peer-to-peer systems, and sex toys. Blockchains are neither of those things.
The few opinions I have about cryptocurrencies are summarized in the next few tweets.
Bitcoin is cool. I use it to buy groceries sometimes. It's probably going to be around for a long time. The energy consumption is ridiculous and the price is mostly speculation but I hope the latter drives solutions to the former.
Even if you ignore the developers complete unwillingness to accept basic cryptographic principles, IOTA's tangle architecture makes no practical economic sense.
Smart contracts are a cool idea which will be implemented insecurely as solutions to unsuitable problems and doom as all to a decade of bad ideas.
When Ethereum hard forked because of the DAO they demonstrated exactly why smart contracts can never be used for anything important and contentious.

The idea that you can fork an economy is intellectually amazing, and philosophically terrifying.
