I don't know, but maybe it's that people have always wanted to oppress their peers, but they've never really had the ability until everyone went online.
Now, with social media, you can impact someone socially to a far greater degree than has ever been possible.
Don't like what someone said? Bring your thousand nearest friends along to bash and nag that person, so they know just how much of an idiot they are.
Hell, you can even get someone's advertisers pulled, or get them fired from their job.
Those things would've required far, far more effort just twenty years ago.
It means that risky ideas and counterintuitive thoughts are way more socially expensive than they otherwise would be.
