Hi, hello. Are you angry that City Council failed #DefundNYPD? Me too. But! I have good news. 35 out of 51 Members are term limited at end of next year. Let me introduce you to some progressives of color running for their seats, who could really use your support (thread):
First a note: there will be more to come! It’s early days, & some haven’t setup/announced campaigns yet. But all the below have active donation links & there is a big fundraising deadline July 11. Your $ could help them qualify for 8-1 matching funds from the City! That’s big.
Brandon West @westforcouncil: District 39/BK (now Brad Lander). Brandon is a policy wonk who deeply understands the budget, currently works on national voting rights issues, and has been heavily involved in #DefundNYPD and #OccupyCityHall. westforcouncil.com

Kinda awestruck right now. Protesters at #OccupyCityHall NYC talked about, voted on, then organized a defense of the encampment, then successfully pushed back a massive horde of NYPD riot cops early this morning.

Here's how these five incredible hours went down:
Shortly before 3:00 am, people call for a general assembly, for which a majority of the protesters who decided to stay overnight (a few hundred) gather. A (very skilled) facilitator takes the mic to address the pressing issues of the encampment.
First issue: The budget vote is over -- do we stay or do we leave? A few who feel strongly take turns at the the mic. There's some emotional testimony from some who were at the violent and injury-ridden police raid on the encampment the morning prior.

đŸ§”: Today, the narrative has been that Black folks aren’t out here leading in the work—and specifically on #NYCBudgetJustice. Here are 10 Black folks whose organizing & leadership have paved the way for all the “new folks” to follow (in no particular order)...
1. @AnthoninePierre at @BKMovement, who has built a grassroots movement in central Brooklyn & has been unapologetically leading us to true transformation. Anthonine has been LITERALLY EVERYWHERE since the pandemic broke. If you know, you know.
2. @Jawanza of @VOCALNewYork, who has led #OccupyCityHall night after night without fear.

3. @Kassandra_Fred, who for 10+ yrs has led the movement to end the drug war at @DPA_NY & now nationally at @DrugPolicyOrg (talking about marijuana reform way before y’all were hip to it).

NYC Council stated meeting on the budget is finally on. Watching live: council.nyc.gov/livestream/
Unrelated, the St. Louis khakis-no-shoes-AR15 guy is telling Chris Cuomo he was a victim of terrorism. What a time to be alive.
Meanwhile, @Macys just launched a mortar attack on Brooklyn maybe. It's loud out there. Hide your kids, hide your dogs, hide your veterans.

I feel sick.

Hundreds of people have been camping out by NYC City Hall for a week to demand the city defund the NYPD.

The budget vote is today.

So the mayor sent the NYPD to break it up before the vote.

Knowing that meant beatings and arrests.
@NYCMayor did you want to avoid bad press around your bogus budget? Because this looks like the start of some pretty bad press to me.
The NYPD assaulted these people just hours ago. When I was down at #OccupyCityHall it was the definition of a peaceful protest.

Free food, discussions, even free COVID tests.

And now, because the budget vote is today, the violent NYPD was unleashed.

as much as I loved my grad arch school, part of this project needs to be about understanding how the formal/aesthetic aspects of my architectural pedagogy might be deeply racist, or denialist in the privileging of form, concept, agency, design in architectural spaces
design focused on authorship, identity, difference is deeply problematic. It treats space as being about trying to be as “non-fungible” as possible, a “unique product” rather than a living thing that is deeply connected to our notions of community and relation
the notion of “new designs” is also deeply problematic; (I forget whose argument this is)
The focus on newness is a fundamentally market driven understanding of architecture, where value is achieved through distinction from other spaces. Spaces $ because they’re not like others

For #BlackHistoryMonth, I wrote about the interconnectedness of Black and Queer histories. I want to reinforce that message, especially during this Pride Month, as we see Black, Queer and Trans people marching nationwide for dignity and justice. gaycitynews.com/black-history-

We follow in the steps of the Black & brown trans folks who led the Stonewall Riots. As stated in my piece, “For some, courage has to be summoned. For others, bravery comes without choice. For the Black queer community, our leadership has so often been tethered to our survival.”
The #QueerLiberationMarch reclaims #Pride & takes to the streets in support of #BlackLivesMatter #OccupyCityHall + #NYCBudgetJustice to invest in communities of color, youth, education, & healthcare programs & services that are integral to making & keeping our communities whole.

1. I don’t believe in mask shaming (shame as a public health tactic simply never works), but having gone to #OccupyCityHall last night where literally every one of hundreds of ppl were masked but for bullhorn speakers, I have a theory about how to get ppl to mask up...
2. To get ppl to wear masks, u must engage them in activities where they care for others & are cared for by others—where an activity (other than mask wearing) is a form of love/care.

Shopping is NOT such an activity! It’s about getting stuff for me & disregard for worker thee.
3. Every protest I’ve been to, well upwards of 90% of ppl have been masked up. Last night at #OccupyCityHall #Occupy2020, literally everyone but ppl as they took the bullhorn or are were masked. BC the activity & the world itself were ALREADY abt mutual care.
