1/ Last month, NYC launched its first curbside #composting effort in Queens, with the goal of expanding across the city to keep the 8M pounds of residential #FoodWaste generated daily from rotting in #landfills and createing #climate damaging emissions. buff.ly/40Mmyqu
2/ After the food scraps are collected, they’re sent to one of two #AnerobicDigestion facilities, where bacteria break down #organic materials in the absence of oxygen to creates a mixture of gases – or #biogas, which can be burned to produce #energy.
3/ But, as @LFO has made clear, #AnerobicDigestion can get tricky. Particularly when #FoodScraps are sent to the #digesters at wastewater treatment plants, which are used to reduce the volume of #SewageSludge. This is happening in NYC. buff.ly/3HNF4s4

A year ago I visited the United States of America under @YALINetwork. Apart from the arranged leadership program, I visited Iowa dumping sites where I learnt the modern way of making organic manure. I wrote a facebook status articulating my zeal to copy this initiative to Malawi.
I explained my idea to some Environmental scientist in Malawi but non showed interest.
Being persistent in whatever I do, I started the process of making composite manure mainly for use in my fruit tree seedlings at @FarmsPikho
During the first trial, I applied my #compost manure to the fruit trees and ended up burning a greater number of it. This was a sign that my manure was powerful just like fertilizer. I devised ways of redesigning manure production processes.

In IPES-Food's latest report, 'The Added Value(s) of #Agroecology', we focused on a series of obstacles that prevent the transition to agroecological #foodsystems.

🌱 One such obstacle is the *access to #seeds & #organic inputs*. Here's a quick thread on why this matters! 👇🏿

/1
#Farmer seed systems - through which farmers select, multiply, conserve & exchange a wide range of reproducible varieties - are an essential component of #agroecology, which relies on diversity at all levels (including crop genetic diversity). 🌱🌿🌾

/2
#DidYouKnow that these systems account for up to 90% of the seeds used in some African countries? And in #Mali, peasant seed systems make up 75% of the varieties grown in the country.

❗️ However, these systems are lacking in legal recognition and policy support ❗️

Just because something is #recyclable does not mean it's #recycled. This article makes a lot of great points about misleading consumers on the sustainability (or lack thereof) of packaging.

I'd like to add a local and #zerowaste perspective!

The National Sword program in 2017, when China stopped accepting recyclables unless they met the stringent 0.5% contamination rate, had a big impact on recycling.

China was previously a large importer of US recyclables, which now needed to find new markets. (1/n)
As far as contamination rates go, the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) noted this was "nearly impossible."

Even with a contamination rate of 1%, OCRRA has reported on looking for new solutions:

Healthy #soil sequesters #carbon, promotes the growth of nutrient-dense crops, holds more #water, and fights disease. What #farming practices can get you there? A thread:
Cover crops 🌿 When fields are bare, they're vulnerable to #erosion and #nutrient loss. Planting cover crops protects against this, while also smothering weeds, controlling pests, retaining #water, and enhancing #biodiversity.
Crop rotation 🔄 By refusing to plant the same #crop over and over, #farmers can return nutrients to the #soil without synthetic inputs. Crop rotation also wards off pests and disease, which have a harder time adapting with constantly-changing crops.
