How did Punjab fare w.r.t #paddy #straw burning this year !

This year burnt area is 14.88 lakh hectares Vs 14.17 lakh hectares paddy acreage burnt till Nov 20, last year

Till Nov 21, Punjab recorded 49,526 farm fire incidents Vs 70,879 field fire cases during last year. Image
This year the total area under #rice cultivation in #Punjab is 30.29 lakh hectares, nearly 4.5 lakh hectares is under basmati rice, while the remaining 25.79 lakh hectares is under paddy. Farmers mostly burn paddy areas as basmati stubble is used for making fodder for the cattle.
Out of nearly 26 lakh hectares of paddy area, #Punjab has already burnt #stubble in 14.88 lakh hectares (57% of the paddy area and 48% of the total rice area in the state) till now. Around 3 lakh hectares (20%) of paddy acreage was burnt in just 5 days from November 14 to Nov 18.

1/ What is LandX ($LNDX)? How does it work? How does it bring sustainable yields, and how does it overall increase financial inclusivity? Today’s #visualguide, in collaboration with @landxfinance, will answer all the above questions.

#DeFi #RealYield #RealFi #Agriculture Image
2/ You’re probably not that familiar with the problems of traditional farmland financing. The difficulty and opaqueness of the process hinders the farmer’s maximum productivity. Image
3/ @landxfinance involves three main actors: (1) investors, (2) validators and (3) farmers/landowners. Validators act as a bridge between (1) and (3), investors are those who seek exposure to yield-bearing commodities. Image

Not sure how on the radar this is for you but the #Chinaflooding season starts in 13 days and it’s already a catastrophe.

An interesting analysis of the situation.

The #Crop #Diversity #Experiment funded by @snf_ch can show first results available on @biorxivpreprint. First year results from #Switzerland show 21% and 44% increases in yield in 2- and 4-species #mixtures, respectively. Yield benefits in Spain were 3% and 13%. (1/5)
In a first study we can show that these yield benefits of #intercropping are not due to reduced #weed pressure. Weed abundance was related to crop yield, but not affected by crop #richness, but rather by the presence of #cereals (2/)

A second study shows that increased crop yield in mixtures is both related to positive #sampling effects of tall species and positive #complementarity effects through more efficient #nitrogen use

Healthy #soil sequesters #carbon, promotes the growth of nutrient-dense crops, holds more #water, and fights disease. What #farming practices can get you there? A thread:
Cover crops 🌿 When fields are bare, they're vulnerable to #erosion and #nutrient loss. Planting cover crops protects against this, while also smothering weeds, controlling pests, retaining #water, and enhancing #biodiversity.
Crop rotation 🔄 By refusing to plant the same #crop over and over, #farmers can return nutrients to the #soil without synthetic inputs. Crop rotation also wards off pests and disease, which have a harder time adapting with constantly-changing crops.

There's been a story in a UK tabloid (that I won't name), and @BBCRadio4 of all places; that #rocket #salad causes #cancer due to high levels of #nitrates in the leaves. Here's my take, and what's wrong with the thinking behind it.

A thread.

1/12
It's true, #rocket #leaves are hyperaccumulators of #nitrates ; this isn't anything new. It's been known for a long time. Other crops with high nitrate content include #spinach and #watercress

2/12
Nitrate content varies according to where the #crop is grown, and is closely tied to the soil #plants are grown in, and the amount of #light they receive. Rocket leaves grown in #winter have higher nitrate content than those grown in #summer
