The Democratic Party needs a messaging revamp, like now. You can't tell us "Democracy itself is on the line", even when that's true, and expect to get by on this milquetoast bs. You lost the midterms to a clown show, and its getting worse.

FACT: Republican malfeasance in our nations pandemic response killed 500,000 Americans or more. They called it a chinese bioweapon but then protested and fought every measure to save lives while stuffing their pockets with tax money.

FACT: Donald Trump is a criminal who tried to overthrow the constitution in a violent coup attempt. He needs to stand trial for that, and his enablers in congress need to be REMOVED under the 14th Amendment. The excuse that "they wont let us" is trash.

#StudentLoanForgiveness is such a horrible idea to begin with. Who gives the government authority to selectively bailout certain students.

It’s not loan forgiveness, it’s loan transfer to taxpayers who never have a say in these policies.
If your college degree isn’t worth paying for, it certainly doesn’t for the taxpayers to do so

This is my research into the Kafkaesque user experience offered by @FAFSA when chatting with the Federal Student Aid Information Center to find out very basic contact information for an incarcerated borrower. Image
This means that unless an incarcerated borrower is at the rare prison that has approved the 1-800 number for @usedgov or there is a prison staff who helps them call, they have no way to find out basic #studentloan info like servicer or balance, even if they have outside help
People in #prison don't have internet, most prisons don't allow 1-800 calls, @FAFSA doesn't have a non 1-800 number, there's no physical mailing address, and the Federal Student Aid Information Center said they wouldn't talk to someone else, even if they had a POA

This is for those struggling with #studentloanforgiveness because they don’t understand the data points. Only 16% of native born Blacks had a BA degree from this chart from some yrs back. If we focus on #ados it may drop well below 15%. With a chunk not qualifying due to default.
This program is targeted to galvanize the middle class of white voters. That’s not even hidden. — If you didn’t understand this and focused on one person that can get a little relief rather than the political and economic impact you’re missing the discussion.
You had 1 person try to push simulation data. You don’t have the scaling to do a simulation, nor a tweet with projections. Another said bc they target Pell Grants it’s about blacks? Beyond the raw number of grads above. Black pell grantees under $75k overrepresent in defaulted.

#Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness Plan Doesn't Do Enough for Black Americans

"I won’t benefit from Biden’s plan to cancel up to $10,000 of student loan debt (or up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients) for individuals making less than $125,000 a year."
"And though I don’t find the reasoning behind the income cap dispositive,I get the basic idea:those with higher incomes, like myself, can generally handle their loans more easily than those with lower incomes."

🧵This thread is for those whom never had to deal w/ crippling student loan debt & may not understand why many need help. I'm glad there are folks whom had scholarships, grants, family help, wealth, etc & paid off or have zero school debt. 1/

I worked 30 hrs/wk while full-time in the Architecture program (@virginia_tech) which frowned upon having a job due to our demanding work loads/hrs. I'm not bitter about working, I'm just stating I worked hard (like many others,) yet I still have crippling student loan debt. 2/
This is the opposition I'm hearing:
"Why can't you just pay?"
"You are a deadbeat."
"I paid my debts, so should you."
"Where's my hand out?"
"You should have refinanced."
"If you couldn't afford college you shouldn't have gone." 3/

Bernie Sanders, the man that made abolishing student debt a popular issue in US national politics.

Bernie Sanders’ campaign for the presidency of the US has galvanized people all over the country, putting economic, racial, & social justice into the spotlight, & raising hopes that Americans can take their country back from the billionaires & change the course of history. Image
In this book, Sanders tells the story of a passionate and principled political life. He describes how, after cutting his teeth in the Civil Rights movement, he helped build a grassroots political movement in Vermont, making it possible for him

Black Americans paid taxes during segregation for pools they weren't allowed to swim in, fountains they couldn't drink from and buses they had to ride in the back of. So...miss me with this "Why am I paying for school I didn't go to?" At least this is about uplift, not hate.
I wanted to clarify for the confused. I wasn’t saying that Black graduates won’t benefit from the plan but that there is precedent for taxpayers contributing to things they did not - or legally could not- benefit from.

On the heels of #studentloanforgiveness in the US, I did some research on the #freetuition movement being pushed by leftist politicians here in Canada, and unearthed a lot of interesting facts. #cdnpoli

Sharing here in a 🧵
The average debt owed by Canadian university students upon graduation at both the bachelor's and master's level is $28,000.

For grads with a doctorate, the average is $33,000 of debt. (source: www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.…)
Despite the @NDP's website stating: "Young people shouldn’t start out with a mountain of debt," each Canadian's individual share of *government debt* is greater than the average debt of a graduating doctoral student! ndp.ca/student-debt

In light of today’s #studentloanforgiveness news, I am thinking about @DarrickHamilton and the many Black economists and academics who have - for nearly 20 years - made the case and connected student loan debt to wealth inequity and racial and economic justice in the U.S. 1/x
Just 6 years ago, when I was freshly new research analyst in DC, I regularly attended events where panelists not only considered student loan debt cancellation a “dumb” idea and, thus, impossible, but that the framing of student loan debt as a “crisis” was overinflated. 2/x
Needless to say, the conversation and context has changed quite a bit since then. For history’s sake, we cannot underestimate the dramatic impact the global public health and economic crises have had on leading to this outcome at this time. 3/x

President Biden announced a #studentloanforgiveness package that will benefit 43 million Americans.

It includes capping income-based payments for undergraduate loans at 5% of the borrower's monthly income as long as they aren’t behind on payments.

Some analysts believe that change may prove even more significant than the debt forgiveness.

Biden described his action as a matter of economic fairness that will “provide more breathing room for people” and boost America’s competitiveness.

Income-driven repayment, as it’s called, has been in existence for some years, but just 32% of federal direct loan borrowers had enrolled in it as of last year, according to the College Board.

The troublesome slippery slope of forgiving debts without understanding the dire consequences of doing so is upon us. Sadly, we are headed down the road to South American populism. Venezuela 🇻🇪, Bolivia 🇧🇴, Ecuador 🇪🇨, and Argentina 🇦🇷 have caught this disease in the past..
and it’s ruined them all. Designed to generate additional votes from jobless or economically challenged voters, it has proven, time and time again, to be the road to perdition. How will this message change the behavior of student loan borrowers in the future? How do the
students that obtained jobs and dutifully repay their debts feel about this cancellation? Should we also forgive mortgages for the same income cohort? Why stop at student loans? I think the powers that be are about to learn what ‘moral hazard’ actually means. 😞
