108.01/ Week one-hundred and eight, August 6-11, 2022, thread begins here.

Its #TishaBAv tonight & tomorrow; the saddest day in the Jewish calendar.

Week 107 thread below.
108.02/ My kids asked if they can watch TV to help get through the fast. I said after chatzot and as long as it's not laugh-inducing or super fun. They asked for an example & this year it's perfect: the home debut of #DeGrom! It's bashert.
108.03/ I've started calling #Diaz the #Matador. He's a shutdown closer with amazing, upbeat walk-up music. #LGM

Week 106 below.
107.02/ The absolute ghoulish glee I'm seeing people directing vitriol & dogpiling violence against @AnaMardoll is frightening. I see what you allow yourself to do to people you think are "acceptable" targets.

A #TishaBAv thread

Are you in possession of a family heirloom? It could be a piece of jewelry, a candlestick or chalice, an ancient book.

1/
The value of an heirloom extends far beyond its appraisal value. It speaks to your family’s place in history. Heirlooms remind you of legacies. They may even point you toward your destiny.

2/
Some heirlooms are less tangible - a poem, a tune that has been handed down, through the generations.

Today, Tish’a B’av, is one such heirloom.

Week 51 below:
52.02/ I'll see if I can write up a number of the divrei Torah I gave over Shabbas, but I can recommend this shiur from 2000 from my teacher Rav Reuven Taragin.

52.03/ Little known fact: lasagna wasn't invented for the #NineDays but I'm not sure I'd make it through without it.

As a kid, I wondered why Garfield went nuts over lasagna until I was told that it's supposed to have meat in it, and then I got it. Game changer, I'd imagine.

2/ I was about to daven mincha (at home, haven't gone to shul since Adar 16) & the eulogy started, so I sat there in my tallis & tefillin, along with my whole family to hear Pres. Obama
3/ Many thoughts ran through my head: the comparison of Rep. Lewis to Moshe Rabbeinu. Why was Moshe chosen? He was the most humble of all men. There's a strain in Chazal that wants to make him chosen by birth. That his heritage as a Ben Levi, Ben Amram, *made* him the leader

1/ As #Tishabav ends, a reminder of customs to remember the Temple's destruction. At a wedding, the groom breaks a glass to remember the destruction.
(Why not the bride, too, if she has thick soles? With medic training, I once had to bandage a groom's foot - thin soles.) 🤵👰
2/ Another custom: sprinkle a few ashes on the groom's head (why not the bride? The hair?)
I once saw an officiating Rabbi use cigarette ash. Yuck!
INSTEAD, for real ash from Temple Mt excavation, DM me with a pic of invitation for a thimblel full. Image
3/ A great revered Rabbi I know picks some twigs or leaves from a tree on the Temple Mt. (There were no trees there during Temple times.)
He burns them in his oven & uses that ash at the many weddings where he officiates.

As we prepare to enter #TishaBav, the saddest day of the Jewish year, I'm thinking of the utter despair of people after the destruction of both Temples-- esp for those who lived through the slow march toward the sacking of the 2nd. Roman occupation, long siege, the end. (1/8)
The moment when what one has known no longer exists, of entering a new era in which basic survival-- and the survival of a people--is not guaranteed. We know that Judaism emerged transformed from this destruction, but one could not know in the moment. (2/8)
The book of Eicha (Lamentations), read tonight (& written about the first Temple), captures the desolation and loneliness of the moment-- the city of Jerusalem sitting solitary, bereft of its people. (3/8)

#TishaBav Wed night-Thurs night. 9th Day of Av is the Jewish People's national day of morning. Fasting, reading lamentations, no leather shoes...
The Day both Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed. Sculpted relief from Arch of Titus in Rome⬇️

What else occurred?

So much destroyed, so many massacred in 70 CE. So much still visible.
Stones from the great walls destroyed by Romans.
The "burnt house" in the Old City, just like it was when it was destroyed by Romans. Almost like Pompeii. Very personal, like arm of young woman. ImageImageImageImage

Sure, "polls aren't votes", but 15 pts down means Trump's (ym"sh) vulnerable, dries up fundraising, allows GOP electeds to contradict him publicly, allows reporters to treat him normally & not as the magician of 2016 who commands a cult of violent kooks.
To combat the complacency that the polling imbalance could bring, I suggest telling fellow anti-Trumpites that no matter how much DJT is down in November, when you vote, it will feel as good as punching him in the face with all of your strength

Here is a thread from my Covenant & Conversation essay on #Nitzavim called "Not Beyond the Sea". You can read it at bit.ly/2lDoxzZ, listen to it at bit.ly/2mHceCQ, or download the accompanying Family Edition at bit.ly/2lNnkpI. #shabbatshalom
The beauty of #Jewish #spirituality is precisely that in #Judaism, #God is close. You do not need to climb a mountain or enter an ashram to find the Divine Presence.
It is there around the table at a #Shabbat meal, in the light of the candles and the simple #holiness of the Kiddush wine and the challot, in the praise of the Eishet Chayil and the #blessing of #children, in the #peace of mind that comes when you leave the #world to look after…

“Other than breathing, it appears all #Jewish rights on the Temple Mount have been stripped away” >> my @LegInsurrection post from 2015. Very sad that not much has changed since then 😢 #TishaBAv legalinsurrection.com/2015/07/jewish…
@LegInsurrection This year the Waqf, Jordanian authorities & the PA did everything they could to prevent devout #Jews from visiting the holiest site to #Judaism on #TishaBAv & ensured that violent clashes would occur on this holy day for Muslims & Jews 😡 #ReligiousFreedom #TempleMount #Prayer 1/
@LegInsurrection Until #Jews can freely visit (& pray!) at their holy sites w/out needing armed security escorts & w/out fearing for their lives, there will never be peace 😢 #coexistence #TishaBAv 2/

.@khamenei_ir’s faux concern for the Palestinian people runs so deep that under his reign of terror he provided less than $20,000 in aid since 2008, while sending millions to Hamas & other terrorists. In contrast, U.S. provided $6.3 billion in support to Palestinians since 1994.
It’s sick that on the eve of #TishaBAv — a solemn day for the Jewish people — @khamenei_ir calls for violence against the Jewish state.
.@khamenei_ir doesn’t see “progress” as prosperity for the Palestinian people, but Palestinian terrorists switching from rocks to rockets to kill more Jews. The Iranian people don’t want this; they deserve leadership behaviors that reflect their greatness.
