The Violence Against Women Act led to massive new interventions in people's lives even when they didn't want it, to more abuse *victims* being arrested, & often to escalating abuse

As Judith Levine & Erica Meiners write in The Feminist & the Sex Offender, the Violence Against Women Act "married anti-violence feminists to the violent state." smile.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS…
Joe Biden's heart was probably in the right place w/the VAWA. But like so many "helpful" '90s crime laws, his policies ended up putting more people in danger and shuffled more Americans into the state's web of surveillance &control reason.com/2020/08/20/kam…

So far, this is a 3rd night of liberals telling you why you shouldn’t vote for President Trump - not why you should vote for Joe Biden.

#DNCConvention
.@DouglasESchoen just echoed my point, albeit more eloquently (via @FoxNews):

“The first three nights of the DNC reveal that the Democratic Party is employing the same strategy that was used in 2016—building an anti-Trump coalition, rather than offering... change for America.”
“...Biden cannot win the election by riding on Obama’s coattails... Biden and the Democrats have struggled throughout the convention to communicate a positive, cohesive narrative surrounding Biden’s candidacy that is more than a reaction to Trump...

“I never expected that my successor would embrace my vision or continue my policies. I did hope, for the sake of our country, that Donald Trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously. But he never did.” @BarackObama speaks the truth. #DemConvention Image
"And the consequences of that failure are severe: 170,000 Americans dead. Millions of jobs gone. Our worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished, and our democratic institutions threatened like never before.” #Obama on #Covid_19 and more
“Over eight years, Joe was the last one in the room whenever I faced a big decision. He made me a better president. He’s got the character and the experience to make us a better country.”

We're ready for it, @BarackObama. #DNCConvention #DemocraticConvention Image

AOC endorsing Bernie last night at the #DNCConvention made perfect sense.

Most politicians don’t want change. They want to advocate change.

If AOC gets power she’ll have to perform. That’s make or break.
Look at Bernie’s entire senate career. He’s never had to implement one of his progressive beliefs and suffer the consequences of it.

He stays pure. A champion of reform. It’s given him decades of success. That’s AOC’s model.
Look at so many never Trumpers. They spent lifetimes advocating for life. Tax cuts. Israel. Ending wars.

@realDonaldTrump does it all and they hate him. Why? Because now they have nothing to do.

They didn’t want change. They wanted to advocate for change. That’s DC.

The Democratic National Convention has a distinctly different feel this year, with the #Covid pandemic pushing it to a virtual affair that lacks raucous crowds, behind-the-scenes dealmaking and the general pizzazz of a political celebration politico.com/news/2020/08/1…
The opening night featured a moment of silence for George Floyd, the Black man killed by Minneapolis police in May.

Floyd's brother commended the protests against racial injustice as a fitting tribute and listed the names of others killed by police politico.com/news/2020/08/1…

Have been wanting to demystify #DNCConvention for folks as we head into this week, so a thread on what a DNC Convention is, who runs it, and how it works....
The #DNCConvention is run by the DNCC, the Democratic Convention Committee. This is significant -- the DNC proper is a (somewhat) separate entity from the DNCC. Why? Because the nominee is often very deeply involved in the Convention.
The DNC proper typically picks the Convention city (that happens over a year in advance, is sort of like the Olympics where cities vie for a spot in a competition of sorts). This year's "Convention city" is technically Milwaukee. #DNCConvention

Sure, "polls aren't votes", but 15 pts down means Trump's (ym"sh) vulnerable, dries up fundraising, allows GOP electeds to contradict him publicly, allows reporters to treat him normally & not as the magician of 2016 who commands a cult of violent kooks.
To combat the complacency that the polling imbalance could bring, I suggest telling fellow anti-Trumpites that no matter how much DJT is down in November, when you vote, it will feel as good as punching him in the face with all of your strength
