Yesterday was #WorldAIDSDay, established by the United Nations in 1988 to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic. Since the early 1980s, over 80 million people have contracted HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS. About 40 million have died from it. 1/

About 84 million people worldwide have had HIV since the epidemic’s start. About 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV. While overall new infections declined 73% between 1984-2019, almost 35,000 new infections occur each year. #WorldAIDSDay

It's difficult to explain to those who weren't here, but the difference between how this country and this world responded to Covid, an indiscriminate killer and aids, which in early days exclusively killed gay men, makes one thing very clear: they were willing to let us die.
We were a punchline, we brought this on ourselves, god was punishing us, simply because we had to audacity to be ourselves, to love each other. Those quiet boys, dancing in the corner, suddenly falling, everywhere you looked.
And they didn't care. We were always seen as less, as expendable, as weak.
And here we are trying very hard to reduce stigma and discrimination, and @KKMPutrajaya at the National World AIDS Day event invites AP Dato' Dr. Izhar Ariff bin Mohd Kashim to speak on the Role of Society in Combating HIV-AIDS. Ok Prof if you can’t be compassionate, at the very
least you can try and not be so bigoted and hurtful at a World AIDS Day event ! And as if that’s not enough, you are also spreading wrong information about how the disease can be transmitted. Honestly, JKNS and AIDS-STI Unit KKM you can do and be better than this.

Day 1 of #APaperADay challenge. I read this classic piece of Dr Barbara McClintock where she described the transposons. It was a seminal discovery breaking the age-old concept of the linear arrangement of genes like beads on a string.

She described such mobile elements, Ac (Activator) and Ds (Dissociation) loci, in maize. These loci change their position which would reversibly alter the gene expression once inserted in the chromosomes. The removal would restore the gene function. #APaperADay
On this #WorldAIDSDay, I recall the poem "Here" by Paul Monette, a poem he wrote for his partner Roger Horwitz who died of complications of AIDS in 1986. Paul himself died of complications of AIDS in 1995.

On this day, I mourn the lost. I remember the fighters and I remember the war. I honor the survivors: for many, COVID is not the first or even the worst pandemic they have faced and survived. I am grateful that they are still here.

People with HIV are currently not able to join the armed forces, and anyone diagnosed while serving is no longer deemed ‘fully fit’ and banned from certain operations 🙃
But from today, those who do not have HIV but are taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication to protect themselves against infection will be able to join and serve with no restrictions.

We're doing more to fight the stigma too. The Armed Forces have committed to ensure being HIV+ is no longer a barrier to entry for those wishing to serve in uniform. This reflects the fact that HIV+ people on treatment live full and active lives.

Quello che fu definito “paziente zero” (ormai sapete tutti cosa sia un paziente zero) fu Gaêtan Dugas un giovane assistente di volo accusato di essere stato lui a far uscire il virus dall’Africa e di aver contagiato la comunità gay occidentale.
Chiaramente era falso ma fu accusato di aver intenzionalmente diffuso la malattia tra gli anni 70 e 80.

When we left off, we'd experienced the thrill of effective combination ART. Our 2 major news magazines featured advances in HIV on their covers! One of these guys was a basketball star, the other an HIV researcher -- see if you can guess which one is which

But the excitement of having effective ART was tempered by the realization that these treatments had major issues, including side effects, high pill burdens, and low resistance barriers. The "when to start?" question became a central part of HIV care

So I'd written this narrative back in 2008. And the fast story is that it was about me being a hypocrite about pressing a patient to be tested for HIV when I had never been voluntarily tested myself. Why?

I put that all on paper. Spoke this truth about being afraid and how my fear was rooted in the growing numbers of Black women impacted by HIV.
I mean. That's what I told myself.
