Fun with demographic data: here's the 18-21 age cohort in China since the turn of the millennium. This is why I call China a really big Cape Breton.
I kid. Even Cape Breton hasn't seen a 40% drop in 18-21 year-olds in the last ten years. That's really something.
This is still the most amazing thing in the history of post-secondary education: net enrolment rates (total students/18-21 year old population) China, 2000-2016
Here's net enrolments by province. Tianjin and Beijing are well over 100% (meaning lots of older students and lots of people form outside province studying there).

2/ So to be perfectly clear, this study measures APPOINTMENTS not individuals. A permanent appointment by definition only happens once. A contract appointment in many cases happens every year
3/ So the way this study counts things, if you had a uni with two staff members - one permanent & one on a series of one-year contracts, always renewed, over the 11-year period covered by this study, 11 out of 12 appointments would be part-time. OMG 92% of appointments are PT!!

Weekend writing project: have realised that sumo's banzuke is a much better metaphor for university rankings than football/baseball league tables and I am going to bore you all to tears explaining why.
Basically, you need to think of Harvard, Oxford Stanford (internationally - domestic equivs would be UT, McGill, UBC) )as Yokozunas who are not only at the top of the table but by definition can never be demoted, you get something closer to the dynamics of how these things work.
