1/ 📈 May 2018 financial update for @Baremetrics.

This is one of those months where transparency isn't fun and if I'm honest, I debated *not* posting anything because dangit it just doesn't feel good.
2/ Coming up on the end of April, we were soooo close to hitting $100k MRR. I was confident we'd hit it within a week or two...then we went the entirety of May and ultimately were flat.
3/ Biggest issue was we had a handful of larger accounts cancel. No common reasons among them, just unfortunate coincidence that they happened in the same month.
4/ I do think we've had higher-than-normal churn due to infrastructure stability issues, which we actually resolved a couple of weeks ago:
5/ Our overall finances are still just fine and dandy on the profitability side, but having a slow month just isn't fun.

Ebbs and flows. And SaaS ebbs and flows a lot more than people like to think it does. 🙂
6/ I'm trying hard to not overcompensate and start trying 100 different things to "fix" it, when in reality it could be an anomaly and it'll be business as usual this month.

But my personality *is* to try and "fix" things...so I'm sure I'll waste a little bit of time on that. 😛
7/ At any rate, there it is. Now, I'm gonna go back to sitting here staring at our numbers and being really annoyed. Then I'll get back to actual work.

Was looking into a way to let you @-mention @lasertweets in response to a tweet and have it auto-generate the URL for you...but everything I'm reading says that's against Twitter TOS.
I *think* I'd have to build a whole system where you have to grant permission to a "Laser Tweets" app, and then monitor your account for "@lasertweets" mentions from you and then basically DM you the URL.
Regardless, it's wayyyy more hassle than I imagined it'd be.

This almost feels like something where there some be a hosted service that already handles most of this.

I tried Zapier, but no go (thanks to the Twitter TOS).

1/ Understanding why customers cancel may be one of the most frustrating parts of building a company.

Asking users during the cancellation process why they're cancelling can be really useful, but data is only as useful as the action you take on it.
2/ Lots of SaaS companies have a simple form on their cancellation page that asks the users why they're cancelling...but almost nobody does anything with the data.

It may get piped in to a spreadsheet somewhere or sent to someone's inbox, but then it just fades away.
3/ In addition, even if you're collecting reasons, knowing which reasons to pay attention to is many times nearly impossible.

Sure, maybe most people are cancelling b/c "It's too expensive", but is that actually who's causing the most lost revenue?

For nearly 5 years Baremetrics has relied almost exclusively on a single channel for growth: content marketing. It was a natural outpouring of us targeting "founders". It was easy and in the early days, it worked well, bringing us to where we are today.
But these aren't early days anymore. We're a profitable, five year old company doing over $1M in revenue. We're "old" in startup years and intend to get even older. While we're not a brand new company anymore, our growth methodologies and systems are still in their infancy.

Reminder: straight size people have overwhelmingly been shielded from the most brutal facets of fat hate & anti-fat bias.

To borrow a phrase from the great @tommysantelli, it is designed to be invisible to you & brutally apparent to those of us who are indisputably fat.
I say that because my mentions and emails are a MESS today, full of people who aren't fat telling me how helpful stories like Insatiable are, how they're not biased, they're not harmful, they're real, etc. The lead actors (all thin) of the show have made similar assertions.
To those people, with love: Insatiable was made for you. It was made by and for thin people. It was designed to make you feel good, like your thinness is an accomplishment, like fatness is a failure, a reminder of the life you believe you'd lead if you 'let yourself go.'

Alright, as promised, I’m sharing the judhaba I made tonight! A downright DELICIOUS chicken dish from ninth-century Iraq, this was a lot of fun to recreate. Recipes and pictures in the thread!
If you’re new to following me, I like to recreate historical recipes. I have a great fondness for the medieval Islamic world and the Abbasid era in particular. This works out great because the ruling elites at the time were big-time gourmands and collected recipes.
The culinary arts were regarded as just that…art, and these recipes are a great record of the cultural influences at the time; in particular, the way Persian and Arab traditions came together. Nobles even held cooking competitions, a continuation from a Sassanian tradition.

LRTs - Honestly, any time I think of the history of whiteness, I wonder about the evil done by my blood.

That discovery is horrifying, and Kim is right - whiteness will never grapple with these acts or confront them, just as it hasn't with lynching, slavery, genocide...
Reading about what Confederate soldiers did to "scare" enslaved blacks into staying in the South is horrifying, but it's something I NEVER read about until I went deliberately searching through primary sources.

16 years of school between primary and uni - not one word.
If you told the average white person, especially in the south, the kinds of atrocities Confederates committed on the bodies of escaped black folks, they WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOU.

We like living in our bubble of comfortable deniability.

1 - I work with large companies and I work with small companies.

Large companies and small companies, to nobody's surprise, behave differently.
2 - You don't hear a lot of small companies talk about omnichannel strategy, and for good reason. Those companies aren't buried in complexity.
3 - Large companies are buried in complexity. Some of it is necessary, some of it is political, and some of it is about control.

It’s the answer 2 all our problems. Voting. Elections will fix everything! Yeah, they just blatantly rigged a primary in every way possible. No, no1 has been punished 4 it. But now, with no reform & no convictions, they’ve decided 2 stop cheating
No one is thinking logically on this issue. It’s insane. Why do people think our corporate owners are just going to become suddenly benevolent and stop rigging elections? Why am I the ridiculed one for pointing out the obvious? WTF is wrong with ppl?
The fact that it’s been two years & no investigation into any of the 2016 fraud is astounding. Ppl have allowed the Russia distraction to numb their outrage over Arizona voter suppression, over stolen state conventions & rigged machines, over voter purges, over NPP ballots in CA!
