If you remember one thing, remember this… The best ideas are ALWAYS at the edge.

Here's how information travels on the internet:

1. Reddit, obscure forums, and private group chats
2. Medium posts and podcasts
3. Major newspapers, such as the New York Times

As ideas trickle from forums to mainstream media, informational edge disappears.
New York culture follows the L-TRAIN.

1. Creativity begins in Bushwick, where rents are cheap.

2. Ideas trickle to Williamsburg, which is corporate, but artistic.

3. Major institutions (like Google and the Whitney Museum) at the end of the L-Train pick up ideas and share them.

Just saw the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Whitney Museum in New York.

Warhol's work was a window into another era. An era defined by three things:

1. Mass media
2. Mass production
3. Mass consumption

Some reflections on the exhibit...
/ Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup painting reminded me of Henry Ford’s famous line: "You can have any color as long as it's black.”

In pursuit of mass production, we let go of personalization. Millions of Americans paid the same prices for the same products and the same stores.
/ Instead of making art for advertisements, Warhol made advertisements as art.

He studied our obsession of fame, questioned the rise of commercialism, and highlighted the uniformity of most areas of American life.

One of my top career strategies is taking ideas from YouTubers and bringing them to the intellectual sphere.

Influencers are years ahead of the rest of us. They live at the frontier.

Study influencers and you’ll see the future.
Examples:

- Power of collaboration
- Build relationships w/ daily content
- Casual language
- Brands that feel like friends
- Build trust w/ photos
- Shift from industries to audiences
- Content as a resume
- Be informative + entertaining
- Be short term catchy, long-term sticky
More examples:

- Convergence of people and brands
- Organic content as a marketing channel
- Celebrities that feel like friends
- Using audience data to launch products at scale

Key insight: On social media people want to follow PEOPLE - not companies.

"Write, write, write” and the audience will come is a load of crap.

You have to be writing good content, you have to be marketing yourself, you have to be active on social media – it’s all part of the game.
If you want to have an audience and build a successful blog, you have to stand out.

Just writing crap that someone has probably already written about isn’t enough.

This is the same with production/SRE review. We hate being involved at the last second: it means it's too late to fix anything by the time it launches.

When we provide feedback as SREs, the intention is to catch issues early so they can be fixed in time to say yes at launch.
You don't tack on reliability after the fact.

You don't tack on privacy/security after the fact.

It's impossible to build reliable or secure systems by sprinkling pixie dust on them at the last second.
I'm not concerned about the fact that a reliability review or privacy review turns up red flags. It's our job to find risk.

What I am concerned about when people want to skip SRE/P/S review is that it means leadership has no interest in getting early findings and fixing them.

#VS-Mitarbeiter erzählt im #NSUUA, dass in der Auswertung zwischen "Neonazis" und "NPD" unterschieden wurde. Wer also aus den Freien Kräften kommt und in die NPD eintritt, wird nicht mehr unter "Neonazi" geführt.
So klingt die Zahl der Neonazis gleich ein bisschen besser ☝️
Gleich wurde übrigens mit "Überläufern" von organisierter Kriminalität und Neonazis bzw NPD verfahren, obwohl VS-Mitarbeiter selbst Fall nennt, in dem jemand aus Türsteher/Rockerszene auch im NPD-Ordnungsdienst aktiv war. #nsuuath
Noch mehr Hits: Mitarbeiter war zuständig für NPD-Vorstand, also auch für Thorsten Heise, aber nicht für dessen Musikvertrieb, zb von dem Song "Dönerkiller", in dem schon vor der Selbstenttarnung des Kerntrios die Mordserie des #NSU besungen wurde. #nsuuath

The way the older generation (anybody born before 1975) are going about this charade of calling our generation lazy and not hardworking is bizarre. They try to make us the problem and forget they are the problem. They say we are science students, we take tramadol, etc
But lemme tell them this, we weren't the ones who went abroad on government scholarships, we weren't the ones who ate Full chicken in school and drank milk. We never saw a Nigerian flowing with milk and honey because they concerned themselves with eating and not thinking.
Every old man/woman every where would tell a young person there's no job, that we are lazy and should become entrepreneurs, I understand the whole narrative of creating jobs blah blah blah

Some things in the first year were fun: meeting like-minded people, the #scifi characters, learning how to take effective action. Celebrating #victories like beating the #ACA repeal bills.

A lot of it wasn't fun - the threats of nuclear war, the daily stress of bad news. 2
Follow parties were fun, and a good way to promote a message and raise awareness, connect with other resistors and grow our followings. They had themes and served a purpose and there was about about one a month.  3 #PartyWithAPurpose #trending #amplify #effective
