1. We need to stop stigmatizing partisanship as lazy and anti-intellectual.

It's not.

It's the only thing that will create systemic change in America.

Our problems will not be addressed through technocratic nonpartisan compromises among elites

2. Conventional wisdom is political polarization is destroying democracy.

But as polarization has increased, voter turnout has gone up.

People want choices.

3. That said, there is good partisanship and bad partisanship.

Good partisanship is based around values and policy ideas.

Bad partisanship is based around hatred and misinformation.

But the way to combat bad partisanship is not bipartisanship.

4. I think some liberals are particularly hesitant to embrace partisanship because they believe their political positions are common sense grounded in social science.

Absolutely no evidence of this. Trump cites the cost of illegal drugs, most of which come through official ports of entry.

This is not true. And the deal hasn't even been approved by Congress.

Creating systemic change requires the patience of planting an orchard, watering it regularly, and weathering the excruciating wait to see if the seeds germinate.
I started my journey trying to fix one-off problems.

"This person is being paid unfairly. That project didn't go well."

Putting out fires isn't as effective as preventing fires.
How can we prevent problems instead of chasing symptoms? People write books on that.

There's no "one true path" to finding the root cause and identifying the "best" way to fix that--what does "best" mean? Can we truly help everyone? There are ALWAYS tradeoffs.

Especially for people who live in states where Democrats still have power, the best thing you can do in response to Kennedy’s retirement is contact your state leaders and demand they pass the Reproductive Health Care Act that protects abortion rights.
Making sure blue states like New York, Rhode Island, and others have strong protections for abortion rights isn’t just about the women in those states. We can expect a flood of interstate traffic of women from red states, and need to make sure they can be accommodated.

I got a lot of very sweet messages this past weekend. The news reminded us all to reach out, but it didn't advise HOW to reach out so I figured that as someone who has lived with Bipolar 2 for 20+ years, I'd start a thread about how to reach someone living with mental illness.
This is not to say anyone did a "bad job" reaching out. It is ALWAYS good to reach out in any way. I just want to hopefully help you understand the depressed brain, because it doesn't respond in a way most non-depressed people will understand.
1: If you ask me how I am, I will ALWAYS say "I'm fine". When I'm depressed, I don't reach out, I spiral inwards. The last thing I want to do is reach out, because that means talking about my feelings, and holy fuck do those feelings hurt.
