Consciousness is the internal user interface. (Who’s the user? The organism!)

It started with sensations, emotions & urges coloring bluntly memories, perception & imaginings.

We grew icons for others & since they gave one to us, we higher social animals needed one too: a self.
Then came the freeing leap of using strings of sounds to stand for whatever, inside & between us.

We used these sonic pixels to digitize our memories, perceptions & imaginings —we chunked’em into reusable symbols, to communicate & think with them, to better keep abstracting on.
Soon we stumbled on reasons & stories, higher abstractions of great social use —they converge, flexibly, our thinking & actions!

We’ve been building up interfaces since: our ever more complex icons & displays we call culture.
What is consciousness for? For enabling ever higher creativity of course!

Once creativity has been exerted, its fruits can be replicated unconsciously.

What consciousness buys you is higher level trial & error —converging thought & action across time, space & minds.
Whoa, this rant on consciousness came out almost fully formed.

It was inspired by my reactions to the philosophies of @danieldennett, @DavidDeutschOxf & @fluffycyborg, the histories of @harari_yuval & @stevenbjohnson & the stories of @cstross, Petter Watts & @hughhowey.
