How raya changes over time - food version. on the first day of raya, we always visit my dad's cousin in KB - they serve the best dodol which they made themselves over the course of nights: nangka, kacang hitam, labu, durian dodols - proper chewy bite-size delights. 🤤
Last year, it was my brother in law's first time spending raya with us. So i was telling him about the dodols and how it was going to change his life - i don't really eat dodols because i feel they taste a bit plastic-y but this was an exception.
When we got there, i was eagerly waiting to be served the dodols, kept telling my brother in law to just wait for them. But they never came so my dad casually asked about them since he's had it since he was a kid every raya.
My dad's cousin just shook her head sadly, she said that since their mother passed away that year, they didn't feel like making the dodol - it was too cumbersome to make and it was usually made because it was a tradition with their mom.
This year, i was hoping they'd change their minds but when we visited, they didn't have them again. It made me sad that i'd probably never taste those dodols ever again 😭😭😭😭
I am going to enjoy all the raya food that i enjoy cooked by my family members while i can. I'm about to pull up to an uncle's house that makes the best sayur rebung, i look forward to this every year. Gonna savour every bit!
