Refugees from violence around the world (Latin America, Africa, the Middle East) number an estimated 60 million. The problem is real; worldwide response is weak, often cruel. I understand. They move toward countries with different customs, languages.
Trumpies & their counterparts say the country can't absorb them. They take resources. Yes, language, culture, skills are issues. But consider. These families make dangerous journeys of hundreds or thousands of miles. They face assault, rape, murder, etc.
Could you do that? 59% of Americans (70% in Midwest) live in the State of their birth. Many won't move even when there are no jobs where they live. (Yes, there are valid reasons why they don't). Aren't these the very kind of immigrants
we should want? People with courage and an urge to build a better life for their families. We're a huge country with lots of resources. (Think about what we could do with that tax cut for the rich.) We should be able to set up procedures to
settle these migrants in parts of the country where their skills can be used, educate and train them. Yes, some will never fit in. Some will be criminals. Some will move back home in a few years. But, overall, history & economics show us that they are a net +
Moreover, if we had good processes for training & integrating migrants into American society, we could apply the same strategies to train & help Americans who should move to areas of the country where work is available.
