Breaking the law is seen by many as pretty much a total renunciation of citizenship and humanity.
Taking away kids (and sometimes deporting parents before reuniting them) for misdemeanor crossing shows how deeply this attitude is held.

Trump’s zero-tolerance border policy isn’t just the product of a xenophobic border policy. It also reflects a deeper strand of viewing any criminal violation as grounds for a form of civil death.
I don’t have some profound takeaway from this point. I guess I expect that mass incarceration and mass punishment will likely outlast the current border insanity, and I hope ppl who are angered and motivated now see where to turn their attention next.
