If the action of the narrative is not a fucking coherent causal chain, you do not have a fucking plot, just a sequence of events linked by authorial fiat and idiot plotting, bullshit post-rationalisations. If you don't get motives, you can't write that causal chain coherently.
The most risible part of that Mad Guppy bullshit is when they proclaim their love of all things Story over fancy dan poncy modern literary malarkey. Cause yeah, I've read the bigoted stereotypes and the Whipping Boy characters designed to illustrate the Wrongosity of whatever...
"Whipping Boy" is the term I coined precisely because I've seen so fucking much of this bigoted polemical cardboard cut-out villainy, I needed a term to encapsulate the failure of zero agency characters acting wholly as puppets of an axe-grinding author.
