Everyone knows that startups are “risky” but no one talks about this: reddit.com/r/pics/comment…
One comment to single out:
Something very similar happened to my Dad at Merrill Lynch / Bank of America
Many college grads are told that getting a job at the big companies of today will set them up for life. I’m pretty sure this is less true today than it was for our parent’s generation. And it wasn’t very true for them either.
Interestingly - even despite the risks - I think it is becoming smarter and smarter to start a company if you have technical skills. There is funding available...
... if it doesn’t work out, often you can still get that big company job with a higher salary and more responsibility than if you had just worked there from the beginning.
Also high school and college kids need to remember that startups are like most jobs in the modern economy, a STEM education opens the most doors.
When I was going to school in the early 2000s I wish Yale made a better case to all freshman on how valuable learning to program is. I’d argue it was 10x more valuable than all the econ classes we were shoved into. Learning that skill alone would have made the $150k worth it.
