Parliamentary committee: Windrush generation members were detained "unlawfully and inappropriately" despite right to be in UK. Describing their treatment as "shocking", the committee has called for a "fundamental change in law, culture and procedures".

And, great to see @HumanRightsCtte frame this in human rights terms and remind @sajidjavid of his human rights obligations. Whatever the law or policy, if human rights obligations were taken seriously, situations like this en masse detention of innocent people wouldn't happen.

Court of Appeal rules @ukhomeoffice acted "unlawfully and unfairly" when deciding claims by child refugees in Calais. Court also held the Govt misled the High Court by a "serious breach of the duty of candour and co-operation by the Secretary of State".

Shameful behaviour by the Government - firstly, mistreating refugee minors & then misleading the High Court about how it had behaved and why.
So @ukhomeoffice admitted it refused to give the refugee children reasons why their claims were refused just so they could not take legal action against the Home Office.

As the court says, that is exactly why reasons must be given - so legal action can be taken, where needed!

In today's @DailyMailUK. @IpsoNews rules that the front page article with the headline "Another Human Rights Fiasco" had "serious and significant" errors. It was inaccurate and breached the Editor's Code. Mail forced to publish this ruling, with a reference on today's front page.
"The breach was serious and led to publication of seriously misleading information on an important subject. The misleading information was in a prominent position both in the article and in newspaper as a whole, and it substantially changed the meaning of the article": @IpsoNews
So @DailyMailUK's front page included the claim that he was an insurgent caught with a bomb. But didn't then say that a judge found that this allegation was "pure fiction". @IpsoNews found "the repetition of these serious allegations ... seriously misrepresented the judgment".

Lots of very welcome attention on what Theresa May herself entitled the “hostile environment”. One of main planks is “right to rent”, where landlords have to check immigration papers of tenants. Does this cause discrimination against black and ethnic minority tenants? Thread 1/?
Right to rent was brought in by Immigration Act 2014 and piloted in West Midlands before national roll out. Home Office itself commissioned research in 2015 into whether it might cause discrimination, available here gov.uk/government/pub…
The research was published the same day that national roll out was announced. Not a lot of time for any debate or discussion on this freemovement.org.uk/all-landlords-…

1 - Thread on the Home Office destroying the #Windrush landing cards. Here's how the system should work. Under the Public Records Act, govmt departments must transfer archive records to @UkNatArchives within 30 (now 20) years.
2 - if departments want to keep records for longer than this, as the Home Office did for these papers (until 2010), they must submit a 'retention application form', setting out the reasons why the records need to be retained in the department and not sent to @UkNatArchives.
3 - That retention application is considered by an independent body of historians, archivists and so on (on which for seven years I used to sit). Therefore, there should at some point have been a retention application made for the Windrush disembarkation papers.

This document harks back to “repatriation” campaigns. This document was published when Theresa May was Home Sec, promoting her hostile environments policy – the starting point for the injustices that we are seeing writ large for the Windrush generation. theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/a…
Hard to believe this document was written and published. The fact that the Govnt feels this is an appropriate way to treat the ancestors of those Caribbean pioneers who were invited to Britain as citizens tells its own sad story about the treatment of immigrants in our country.

Thread: Today I have led 140 MPs from 6 parties urging @theresa_may to take immediate action to address the #Windrush crisis. What is going on is grotesque, immoral and inhumane. It is a stain on our nation’s conscience and the PM must act urgently to right this historic wrong.
After World War II we invited the Windrush Generation over as citizens to help rebuild our country, and now their children are being treated like criminals. The government is essentially stripping people of the rights that our government itself granted decades ago.
These individuals have done nothing wrong and there is no basis upon which the Home Office can justify what they are doing. These individuals have lived in this country for decades – working hard, paying taxes, raising their families and contributing so much to our country.
