Here’s some good news from the courts for your timeline: Iowa’s 72-hour mandatory delay for patients seeking abortions was stuck down by the Iowa Supreme Court.
I was an expert witness in this case, and the scientific evidence was clear: mandatory delay laws unnecessarily push patients later in pregnancy before they can obtain an abortion (average delay of over 1 week), and it does not help decision-making. It was simply another barrier.
As the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (@theNASEM) noted in a recent report, mandatory delay laws are another example of medically unnecessary laws that worsen the quality of abortion care. nationalacademies.org/hmd/Reports/20…

During the #KavanaughHearings, Kavanaugh referenced his dissent in a case on the contraception coverage requirement by employers for employees' healthcare. In his testimony, he referred to contraception as "abortion-inducing drugs". This is not medically accurate and is a tactic.
Medically and scientifically, pregnancy begins at implantation. Most contraception works by blocking an egg release or blocking or disabling sperm; sometimes they work to block implantation of a fertilized egg. No contraception works after implantation or causes an abortion.
Medication abortions, or surgical abortions, remove an existing pregnancy. Contraception works before a patient is pregnant. Contraception, Plan B, and IUDs do not cause abortions. There is a huge misinformation campaign to conflate how these things work to undermine access.

This is a moving story about unsafe abortion in 1968. The public health threat of overturning Roe v. Wade is great, but women will not suffer the physical harms to the same degree they did in the 1960s thanks to medical advancements. Unfortunately, criminalization is.
Self-managed abortion is rarely coat hangers and back alley abortions these days. In my research in Texas, patients are more likely to give themselves an abortion through medication abortion or herbs: liberalarts.utexas.edu/txpep/_files/p…
My research has found medication abortion is safe for patients to use on their own (journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…) or via telemedicine (reuters.com/article/us-hea…), however taking medication abortion on your own is criminalized in many states. This is dangerous for patients.

Hey @CDCgov, can we work on the framing here? Women, and all who can become pregnant, are not perpetually 'pre-pregnant’. Caring for their health is about more than their ability to become pregnant.
@CDCgov Yes, folate is important for a healthy pregnancy, but it may be irrelevant to those using effective contraception and/or would have an abortion if they became pregnant. There are many who “can” get pregnant, but don’t have sex with cisgender men and aren’t planning pregnancy.
@CDCgov Let’s move away from a strictly heteronormative, cisgender-focused framing of pregnancy, @CDCgov, and recognize that continuing a pregnancy is not always a desired outcome for everyone. We have to listen to our patients and their healthcare needs.

Important note about today's Iowa Supreme Court decision striking down the state's 3-day waiting period to obtain an abortion: It is based on the Iowa Constitution, not the US Constitution. iowacourts.gov/courtcases/439…
And since the Iowa Supreme Court gets the final says on the Iowa Constitution, that's that on that.
Expect more of this focus on state constitutions and state supreme courts on the left as #SCOTUS moves right.

Good morning, babies. I am just barely awake and I can see confusion and concern over this SCOTUS ruling. I've seen a couple of people reacting to the margin of 7-2, in a couple of ways.
One is to question how it can be described as a "narrow" decision when the margin is so big. The other is to worry about how many and which justices sided against us.

Well, IANAL (and also, separately, I am not a lawyer) but I did go through a SCOTUS junkie phase.
It's a narrow decision because its implications are narrow. They did not rule on the underlying point of law; they only ruled on the previous ruling, finding that it was improperly worded. In overturning it, they did not actually find for the bakery; they left the case open.

 Naturopaths, STOP making patients think they NEED lab tests from MDs! If we disagree, it can compromise our relationship with our patients by making them think they’re being denied something you just told them they HAD to have! You are SETTING US UP for a conflict with them!

 It takes a LOT of time for MDs to explain why MANY (nearly all) of the tests naturopaths are often demanding SHOULD'NT be done! This re-education, takes AWAY time spent effectively on that #patients actual health issues. This isn't helping their care! This COMPROMISES it!!
