Good to see she apologised. As I noted in my essay, however, this case and the many others like it raise ethical issues that'll only become more pressing with time as we become more integrated with our tech.
Of course, now there are a lot of people zealously attacking her--a reminder that the firehose of social media attention runs both hot and cold. But it also misses the point. Blair could've been anyone. And there will be others who invasively livetweet. This is a bigger issue.
In that quest for a "good story" people will look for heroes--and villains. That's what the Plane Bae debacle was about, after all. Now, in this new phase, Blair is a villain. Individualising this story, making it about one person's failings, will not help us grow as a society.
Accountability matters. But we also need to think bigger about how we ourselves are redrawing and nonconsensually editing each other's boundaries.
To be clear, Blair's apology is still lacking, and almost feels passive-aggressive at points. The woman whose life she invaded? Her story is not Blair's to "give back" to her; it was never Blair's to begin with, at any point. It's important to recognise that.
The larger issue is that while Blair took the photos, she had literally hundreds of thousands of accomplices. Including members of the media--from NBC to local news channels to News .com.au. Piling on her and only her erases the collective problem that created this whole mess.
