Screenshot of an ad in a running app today after I finished running. Translated, it says: “Eli Lilly, insulin producer since 1923.” You should add to it, @LillyPad: “Extracting as much $ as we can from people who couldn’t live 3 days without it since about 2000.” #Insulin4all An ad in French with two white rabbits and text on an orange flag.A graph titled « rising insulin prices » showing humalog and novolog going up in price in lockstep over 20 years
For those who are unfamiliar with this issue:
1. There have been no improvements to the insulin in that time.
2. There is no generic.
3. It is only in the US that the price has gone up like this. Exact same insulin costs a fraction in other countries (e.g., 1/10th in Canada.)
4. Type 1 diabetes (used to be called “juvenile diabetes”) is an autoimmune condition. It accounts for about 5-10% cases of diabetes. Those of with it cannot survive without injected insulin.
5. People with type 2 diabetes (90-95% cases of diabetes) may also need to take insulin.
