Oh dear, oh dear ... it's all imploding now. Well, if this is the case, the Gov has its mandate to rerun the referendum, even if it was only advisory -> Vote Leave broke electoral law, says Electoral Commission - bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
... the counter of course is we've had a general election and the Conservatives won on a mandate of leaving the EU, so it's all moot. In other words .... it's all Pete Tong. Very messy indeed and no easy paths.
e.g. you could say the Conservatives didn't win - fair enough, they"re "propped up" - but if we go down this path, you end up with people fighting over who spent more - electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/journal… - any path you choose, it's a mess.
Only clean path I can see is a general election. But to work, you'd probably need Conservative and Labour remainers to join the Liberal party in a "new liberal" party (let us call it the "neoliberals", it has a catchy ring to it) with a mandate of remaining in the EU.
... because, let us be frank ... this is what the fight is really all about. It has been going on for over 20 years. It was going to lead to a bust up at some point and it's not going away until that issue is resolved.
The problem is there is no such thing as Labour vs Conservative. The last twenty years has been one party called "Conservative" which consists of One Nation Tory infighting Neoliberal fighting another party called "Labour" which consists of Old Labour infighting Neoliberal.
If you really want to resolve this - one way or another then you need that new party.
They can call themselves the New Europeans, the New Liberals, the Neoliberals ... whatever makes them happy ... but that split needs resolving at some point or this will just carry on.
