On the defeat - Govt now mandated in law to take all necessary steps to remain part of European medicines regulatory system -a system only open to EEA and EU members, for which the European Commission makes binding decisions...its Single Market for pharma

This does go beyond Government current policy on seeking to participate in EMA... Trade Department statement:
Again, can’t be a member of European system of medicines regulation if you’re a third country - also clear multiple examples of direct European Court of Justice jurisdiction..

So as far as I can see, the only way to fulfil this amendment, is to join EEA, not currently illegal
In fact it is quite useful to temporarily ignore what Government says is its current policy and ponder what has been made illegal by the smorgasbord of Brexiter and Remainer amendments, and work out what is left...
So “all necessary steps” to stay part of European medicines regulation only open to EEA members would surely be an application to join/ maintain EEA membership? At least I could see that being argued in court. Discuss. Hours more legal fun.
Anyway here goes:

1. Patten Amendment from EU Withdrawal Bill, means -

Illegal to bring about changes to Irish border which “feature physical infrastructure including border posts or checks and controls” or any lessening of cooperation “provided for by Belfast Agreement”
2. The Mogg/DUP Amendment to Customs Bill

Makes it unlawful for Government to allow N Ireland to be part of separate customs territory to Great Britain, as suggested in EU draft backstop agreement - no customs border in Irish Sea
3. Jenkin Amendment says Government can’t use fast track executive powers to create a new customs Union with EU but could do so with primary legislation

Interesting - maybe too late. Labour MPs astonished No 10 failed to consult with unions too. Also one told her directly that her talking up of No Deal as a viable option was making things difficult. Ie they need her to say publicly that No Deal is a disastrous non option...tricky

Another ticking No Deal time bomb -Lords Grand committee supposed to take 4 hours to deal with 10 Brexit Statutory instruments - Got through just 3 on stem cells, embryology etc, all referred up to full House of Lords.

Hundreds more required to be passed to correct statute book
Some Govt sources suggesting there is a filibustering game going on here - Lords strenuously deny - todays committee included Lord Winston, Warner, Foulkes, Adonis etc, say it is scrutiny legislated for in Withdrawal Bill.

In any event, cant see how they get through all the SIs

Very good story about Brexit consultancy contracts from @AdamParsons1 and @TomBoadle

My understanding was BCG and Mckinseys ones were to work up rejected plans for New Customs Partnership and Max Fac to test them with very sceptical manufacturers (under gagging clauses ofc)...
Essentially, the Government paying many millions to external consultants to tell them it was going to take years to prepare customs etc, but also trying to square circle of its own red lines on Brexit with keeping frictionless trade.
Plenty of people were telling the Government, often under NDA, for free, that such plans were unworkable...

The manifesto could address the main reasons we have been told for the Leave vote.

It could focus purely on the key areas - immigration, sovereignty, EU federal plans, EU wastefulness.
It could detail precise ways in which we can protect ourselves from these concerns. 2/20

1. So in yesterday's thread I set out the case as to why we need well regulated markets and systems of conformity assessment and the added value it brings. Plenty of remainers agreed with that thread. It makes an obvious case for the single market. A few more points...
2. Firstly I would note that political union is not required for extensive collaboration on standards and customs. Most of what remainers say they like about the EU is not the EU, rather it is the single market and the economic benefits of it.
3. The existence of the EEA demonstrates that we can have equitable trade collaboration with the EU without handing the decision making to Brussels. We do not have to be part of a European proto-state to get the benefits of trade.
