EU calls on member countries to step up No deal preps:

Brexit visas. European Commission confirms that decision on whether UK citizens will need visas for stays of less than three months, ie which “list” the UK is on, is up for grabs, to be decided by European Council “depending on the outcome of the negotiations”
would have to imagine that any half sensible negotiation would leave UK in the following company (US, Japan, Singapore etc) of the 90 day visa exempt annexe 2 list under this regulation... but not nailed down in No Deal eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/…

Letwin almost emotional there - bit between tooth on stopping No Deal will vote for Cooper amendment, said as former Cabinet Office minister responsible for resilience - essentially UK not ready for No Deal. This said as a loyalist who fought hard to get A50 Bill through for PM

EU sources say there will be “no summit” and there are “no actual talks”, some discussions on reassurances. Another diplomatic source tells me even those will not come before the vote next week. /1
Still not entirely sure whether the Meaningful Vote debate that resumes tomorrow will be the continuation of the one curtailed last month or a new one. Former more likely. Would have to make special provision for previous speakers to speak again /2
Tory MPs who attended the Downing St drinks were expecting a bit of a rousing unity speech from PM - surprised there wasn’t one at all even “none of you will be back here” type cajoling. On the way out none I spoke to had changed mind.

The EU isn't punishing the UK for Brexit. We're punishing ourselves. Losing all the benefits of EU membership IS punishment, in the same way as no longer being able to use the fitness equipment, weights or other facilities is punishment for quitting the local gym. 2/25
If you cancel your gym membership, you might well put on weight. But you wouldn't then turn around and say "Hey, the gym punished me for leaving by making me fat!" That would be absurd because it's the consequence of losing your gym membership, not the fault of the gym. 3/25

2/ Medical radioisotopes are elements used to diagnose or treat a broad range of diseases. These include cancer, palliative and cardiovascular treatments. Around 1 million patients in the UK each year rely on radioisotopes.
We import ~80% and are unable to be self-sufficient.
3/ The most common element used is Technetium-99m (99mTc).

Most medical radioisotopes are imported from Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The UK has no research reactors to produce 99mTc, or its parent element molybdenum-99 (99Mo).

99mTc has a half-life of ~6 hours.

Some thoughts on the tragedy that hit Genova. Here's Salvini implying that it’s the EU’s fault because it constrains spending First, the obvious: it’s tragic that even in tragedy Italian politicians, across parties, immediately started blaming someone else
Some of the specifics:

1) the EU has given the green light to some €10bn on infrastructure spending, including in Genova repubblica.it/economia/affar… If anything, the EU has highlighted the need for Italy to spend on infrastructure ec.europa.eu/info/sites/inf… (ht @politicoryan)
2) So why wasn’t infrastructure in Genova upgraded? The need for development in Genova has long been debated, and there was a specific project on the table. Risks to the Morandi bridge raised years ago ingegneri.info/news/infrastru… & ilsole24ore.com/art/notizie/20…

As the wonderful “WTO option” is hyped again, let me just focus on one particular issue that has bugged Brexit again and again. “But our laws are perfectly aligned, so we won’t have a problem”
This claim comes in different forms. I want to focus on it in the format of “there accordingly won’t be customs problems, the EU will/has to leave our products in as before”
In the most stark, logical form it says this: UK products are good to enter the EU without impediment five minutes before Brexit takes place, nothing will have changed in UK laws, health checks, etc. 10 minutes later. Would the EU cruelly impose controls etc.?
