This year, @petermurrell and I have decided to spend our few days summer break at home, enjoying what our beautiful country has to offer - and which I normally only get to pass by on work-related travels. Today, as a birthday treat for this book lover, it was a trip to... 1/
2/...the lovely @ExploreWigtown, where to thanks to @WigtownBookShop @BeltieBooks and others, I picked up some nice editions of some favourite authors...
3/...and a copy of this by the owner of @WigtownBookShop - I’ve heard great things about it...
4/ For a bite to eat, I can also highly recommend @wigtowncafe - Dumfries & Galloway’s first vegetarian cafe. Lunch was delicious...
5/ and an ice cream at Girvan beach on the way home, looking out at Ailsa Craig, one of my favourite sights in Scotland - which always reminds me of visits to my grandparents - was the perfect end to a nice day. All in all, a great reminder of what a fantastic country we live in.

1/ The UK government’s immigration proposals are an act of vandalism on the Scottish economy & public services. They will send our working population into decline, depress growth, reduce revenues & deprive us of the presence & contribution of people who want to build a life here
2/ @scotgov modelling shows that a 50% reduction in EU migration will send our working age population into decline. The estimate in this paper is that the UKG proposals could reduce EU/EEA migration to Scotland by 85%. That will devastate our economy and care sector.
3/ the hit to population and revenues is tangible. Less so - but still so important - is the loss to our society of hardworking people who enrich our society. And of course, ending free movement cuts both ways - we all lose our rights to live, work and study freely across the EU.

1/ If the UK government’s immigration paper is as expected it will be devastating for the Scottish economy - our demographics make it essential that we attract people to live & work here. A reduction of 80% in people coming here from EU will see our working age population decline
2/ Apart from the serious economic damage, these proposals send a terrible message that the UK is becoming less open and welcoming and more insular. Why any PM would want to claim this as a personal legacy is beyond me.
3/ in both the development and content of these proposals, Scotland’s interests have been ignored. If our economy and society are not to be damaged - and the net positive contribution EU nationals make not lost - we need control over these decisions in our own Parliament.
