Will NK transfer remains of US POW-MIAs this week? SK confirms that NK accepted 55 wooden caskets (out of some 200) through Panmunjom on July 20. Today is the expected day of transfer but negotiations re "expense reimbursement" are said to be ongoing

NK is believed to be demanding "big bux" which is against US policy but not against the policy of reimbursing legit expenses of excavating & transferring the remains. To get them out of NK, the US spent on average $65-70k per remain in the past

NK is believed to have assembled about 200 remains and analysts think it's been processing them to exclude non-human bones and debris that may have been included. If an agreement is struck, it is expected C-5 or C-17 military plane will be sent to Wonsan

From Wonsan, the remains will be flown to Osan Air Base for verification and where ceremonies will take place. Then the remains will be transported to Hawaii's DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) facility for identification

NK follows through: the remains are flown via Boeing C-17 Globemaster III which left Osan AFB at 5:55am and returned at 11am, escorted by 2 fighter jets. On the flight were UN Command as well as DPAA officials. The remains will undergo verification in Osan

Unlike reported earlier, the remains will go through verification & stay in Osan AFB until Aug 1, when a ceremony will be held in honor of the MIAs & POWs. Before, it was said the remains will be flown to Hawaii directly for the ceremony and DNA testing koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20…
Sarah Sanders: "We are encouraged by NK's actions and the momentum for positive change." Taking part in negotiations w/NK was Korean-American medical anthropologist Jenny Jin of JPAC (Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command) whose main task is identifying remains
news.joins.com/article/228392…
Jin is credited with IDing 231 remains using DNA techniques. Jin's grandparents are NK refugees transported by US naval ships to SK along w/US soldiers retreating from the Chosin Reservoir. What a coincidence: many remains she IDs are in fact from Chosin

That was a fierce battle where US soldiers were in retreat, outnumbered by advancing Chinese soldiers. So you would expect to find additional remains of MIAs in the vicinity. SK refers to it as the battle of Jangjin Reservoir (Chosin is Japanese): 11/1950
Fortunately, the weather is cold in NK and battle sites remain largely intact with very little industrialization & urbanization. So exploration & excavation are easier unlike in SK where industrial structures get in the way. As Dr Jin makes clear though, we're dealing w/skeletons
Around 3,600 US soldiers died at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir as one US marine brigade was surrounded by 7 Chinese army troops. The battle is acknowledged to be the fiercest ever fought. At one point, US JCoS treated the entire marines who fought there as MIA due to retreat
