Just like other forms of gun violence, laws and policies regarding police violence are not based on science. Instead they are based on a myths peddled by special interests (police unions) that protect the shooter at the expense of public safety.
There are policies in dozens of cities and laws in states like MD and Louisiana giving police days or weeks before being questioned for shooting someone. Why? A few “force experts” said with *zero evidence* that officers needed time for recall and police unions lobbied for it.
The arguments presented by police unions that shape public policy are no more true than the “good guy with a gun” myths presented by the NRA. And yet few elected officials challenge these narratives or even ask for basic data to substantiate them.
