Hey! You remember that piece where I was randomly asked to respond in a 2…3 hour window, about "fixing" Facebook? Well, it's out, and I've found it!
And, of course, like every other Associated Press piece, it is broadly republished in many newspapers, under mostly-the-same-headlines:
You get the same copy at CTV in Canada:
...as you do in the @nytimes
I don't have any great problems with the mechanism; but I do feel that people should know that there exist mechanisms like this — where people are randomly email-shotted for non-substantial quotes; like Timothy Carone who got 6 words:
Paul Levinson (@PaulLev) gets _zero_ directly-quoted words; the only person who gets substantial verbiage (29 words) is @sivavaid, who resonates with the downbeat tone of the article throughout:
Given @PaulLev's take on the article, I suspect that he was brought in because I went silent:
I don't want to grind an axe — go read it for yourself — but people should be aware that this is how the "legit" world works:
nytimes.com/aponline/2018/…
I point this out because exactly the same techniques are used to propagate "fake news" spammyness — bulk replication of a particular point of view under different titles — and the primary thing which makes this instance legitimate is the proper attribution.
Because, I'll tell you what, in this instance it sure as hell isn't a matter of journalistic neutrality, solid research, and equal airtime of relevant views.
@threadreaderapp unroll please, for the sake of those who come after.
