People forget that the next generation of mama mbogas and boda boda people and taxi drivers and the whole of informal sector will be educated upto college/university level.

They'll be digital natives.
They'll be exposed to global trends 1/
The early signs of this shift are evident now

Young graduates leaving school and straight into informal sector

Formal employees quitting 9-5 jobs to go into biashara

For example Met a lady who quit her job to sell bags from mitumba via social media. 2/
In the near future matatu touts will be educated, on the same platforms as everyone else (fb, whatsapp, mobile phone, mpesa, Instagram)

Nairobi's street hawkers will be educated too and on the same platforms as you and I

I'm so tired of these "SALT deduction cap as war against blue state" claims. They are 100% without merit. Let's break down the three main reasons why the cap effects some state more than others using examples cited here. Thread. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
1) NY and CA residents have much higher incomes than MS and WV residents. Here's GSP per capita. NY and CA are two of the richest states in the country. MS and WV are the two poorest states. Unless you think the rich should pay less than the poor, the SALT deduction is bad.
2) NY and CA are more wealthy than MS and WV. Here's median home value (main source of wealth) by state. NY and CA are two of the wealthiest states in the country. MS and WV are the two least wealthy states. Unless you think the wealthy should pay less, the SALT deduction is bad.

Every time I see another mediocre Europe-based fantasy, I think of how many brilliant non-European fantasies got rejected to make room for it.
Because it's not a zero-sum game; there's actually room for both. Fantasy is thriving. But for some editor to embrace mediocrity, she has to train herself not to see the brilliance.

Let's unpack that.
She has to tell herself that the genre can't handle it. (Because the problem can't be *her.*) Readers are too colonized, too Western-centric, too racist, too parochial. And then she's likely to stick to those guns even when the thing crossing her desk is amazing.
