Unfortunately, I have to provide an update here. After the Missouri Democrats' platform committee voted in favor of this language, it appears as if activists and "pro-Democratic" interest groups issued threats. Today, the Missouri Party Chair unilaterally scraped this language.
A few notes: I hope some enterprising reporters will investigate what led to this undemocratic change.
With a vital U.S. Senate election less than a few months away, with an array of Democratic policy priorities on the line, exactly what did "pro-Democratic," "progressive" threaten to withhold if the language stayed?
I mean, this was benign language that basically just told voters in a swing state that the Missouri Democratic Party was pro-choice, but welcomed votes from people who disagree on the issue of abortion but agree on so much else.
Last I checked, Democrats could use all the votes and support they could get, especially in a state like Missouri. Does Party Chair Webber disagree? Is he happy with the number of elected offices held by Republicans in his state?
Instead of just removing language that was voted on, Chairman Webber ought to just state explicitly that the MO Democratic Party doesn't want votes of people who are pro-life.
Here are the latest polls in the MO Senate race. Does this look like a race where Democrats can afford to focus on pushing people away from the party?
What does @clairecmc think? Does she want the votes of people who disagree with her on abortion, because they agree with her on health care, the environment, the social safety net, checking Trump, etc.?
Just remember if McCaskill loses, it is because people who claim to want to check Trump & that the GOP poses an existential threat, were nonetheless willing to focus on removing benign language from the state platform 12 weeks away from an election. Just like they did in PA 2016.
Again, this change is not made unless people w/ power threatened to withhold support/funding unless they got their way. Think about everything they are willing to risk just to remove language maintaining pro-choice stance, but asking for votes of those who disagree. /end/
