Small thread about our sons.
My Boy gets bought a lot of "aren't girls great" books- which is right and lovely- Rosie Revere is one of his favourites. But I notice when I read these that I'm listing solely female accomplishments to a little boy, especially a little boy with -
- a rather dominant older sister & mum. Now, whilst we know that we're rebalancing history- that WE grew up with NO books about female engineers/scientists etc - he doesn't know this, he is living his first life starting Now, so we have to remember BALANCE within their lives IMO-
- not just historically. One day he was watching tv and a Girls Can Do It sports advert came on and it just kept saying "look at these girls!" And I looked at him and realised how that must feel out of context- possibly cos I know how it's felt growing up always seeing guys-
- so I said in passing "the reason we have adverts like this is for years women's sports haven't been pushed - when I was your age there wasn't even women's football on tv" He instantly sympathise and understands - it's not hard to mention this-
- but I do really worry about families where it never crosses anyone's mind to say "this is a book entirely about how great women are cos we didn't have that before" cos I can see boys getting really resentful & angry without this history- I already see young teens fascinated by-
- Incel and Mens Rights. And though you may say "so what? Boo hoo. We've been blotted out by men for centuries" I don't remember being handed a book called "Men Are Great" by a politically active male cousin with an agenda. Balance is VERY important and all it needs is a little-
- explanation to the boys we love and not expect them to know things that happened when they weren't born. My son ABSOLUTELY gets it and feels things were vey unfair before. But I can see some boys getting really sad if they never understand why this is happening. Peace x
I also should say I'm very proud of my cousin for being as politically focused as she is, and he loves the books she gives him...im just comparing like for like.
